I have read a lot of fuzzy-rabbit and HRS about what is good for rabbits to
eat.
However the sites usually talk about plants with their common US names.
This makes it hard for me as most seeds here go by the plants Norwegian name
or latin name.
I am trying to find more than one plant to grow btw. Atleast one for higher
consumption/food and hopefully a couple or more for snack/vitamins etc.
I have some seeds for a type of Cress here, but it doesn't appear to be
"water cress". It's latin name is "Lepidium Sativum" and I think it is
"garden cress". I have started growing some but only because it tasts great
on cheese as I won't give any to Tussi untill I am sure it would be good for
her.
One thing I will pick up promptly is Parsly. It should be a nice treat as
she seems to *really* love Basil.
(There is nothing I have given her that has dissappeared faster than Basil,
next time I will bring out the camera because I can't believe how fast she
gobbles up a stem...)
I tried posting this question as a sidenote before but I think it deserves
it's own posting.
Maby others with green fingers can benefit too?
It would be great if HRS could add latin names to their plant/herb lists.
That would ease a lot of minds.

The easiest thing to grow is dandelion. Here in the U.S. it grows as a
lawn weed. Yellow flower) This has got to be the easiest fastest
growing great tasting food/treat for rabbits. It's considered an
Italian treat, eaten with oil & vinegar. It grows fast enough so that
It might be able to keep up with the rabbits. Try to find Giant Dandelion.
Good luck!

I am fermiliar with those, they sour our lovely green lawns in summertime.
However I know for a fact that my sister will NOT be allowed to grow them
inside or outside due to how much our mother hates them...
(lol)
It will have to be something less hated.
We'll clean off the lawns when summer comes.

OOOH! Kyrre!
My neighbors LOVE me, because I go around with a weed digger (an implement
that looks like a screwdriver, with a forked end) and dig out all their
lovely dandelions for my buns! You don't have to TRY to grow them at all!
And the bunnies love the dandelions. Good for everyone involved (except
me, who gets stuck with sticky green and brown fingers!) ;)
As for latin names, I can try to help. I'm a biologist, and I specialize
in plants. I've got a couple resources I could use to help, if you could
send me a list.
Definitely grow carrots, lettuces, and parsley. Your bun will LOVE them,
and they should be easy to grow in northern Europe. And, of course, just
plain grass. >> Stay informed about: Needed: Recommendations for growing snacks/food for rabbits. |

I have read that some lettuces may not be all that great, while others are
supposed to be very nice.
Problem is finding the right ones...
I have 3 bags of lettuce seeds here:
- Rucola (Think it's called "Runway" but are also referred to as "Mustard
sallad")
- Picking sallad (red type, American style.)
- Picking sallad (green type, Australian style)
If needed, I can post pictures of the plants from the seed-bags.
Unfortunately the bags don't contain any more information except growing
instructions.
If someone could check up on the "Garden Cress" aka "Lepidium Sativum" for
me to verify that it's good for rabbits I'd apprechiate it.
Later today I'll stop by the botanical shop and pick up some Parsly and
Basil. Maby a few others too.
They like Raddish-greens right ?
I could eat the raddish, and the bunny could get the greens. I love
raddishes.

Eh. People like to say that, but I (and others) don't agree with them.

Will you eat the lettuce if bunny doesn't? If so, why not plant all of
them and see which ones he likes?

If it's human edible, it's safe for bunnies in general. Some bunnies
have individual taste preferences and sensitivities, so you'll need to
introduce the new food slowly and see how your rabbit reacts to it.

My guys never really liked radish greens, but some bunnies do.

Thanks all!
I picked up some snacs at the shop today.
- Two kinds of parsly ("Moss Curled 2" and "Comun 3" wich oddly enough have
the same latin name "Petroselinum crispum")
- Basil (Ocimum basilicum L)
- Raddish (Cherry Belle a round type labeled "Raphanus sativus L")
- Spinatch (Nores labeled "Spinacia oleracea L")
I really wish I knew what the L stood for ?
The supplier I have chosen is a lot nicer than the ones I had before though.
They seem more serious in supplying correct info on their seeds.
I like that they all have latin labels, even though they are still confusing
hehe.
Tomorrow I'll go banannas in the greenhouse if time allows.
