Mysterious Injury related to the litter????

Hi..

I recently moved from a house to an apartment.

Whilst getting the apartment settled, we had friends look after Kurt at our
old house so as not to upset him too much by moving him twice.

Anyway, when we got him to his new home, I noticed what looked like a dog
bite on his hind right leg. The wound was already almost completely
healed.. so I decided a vet visit wasnt necessary.

I kept my eye on the wound, which looked to be healing nicely day by day..
then I forgot about it..

This morning I found a droplet of watery blood on the floor, and when I
checked the cat, there is a huge open wound on his leg, in a different spot
from the original wound..

I will be taking him to the vet, but was wondering if this second wound
could possibly have anything to do with the litter I am using???
It's called Catsan made by Masterfoods. (I'm in Australia).

The packet says it is made from silica gel crystals with added freshener

Is anyone aware of any skin complaintss cause by silica???



Please help! the leg looks very sore! I cant get hiim to a vet until
Wednesday due to cashless... called the vet, but because I am new to the
area and unestablished client, he wont offer a pay later option as yet..

I feel so guilty now!!! :(

Hi Shakra,

I don't know if silica can cause such a wound -- I know on some websites
it does say it can cause skin irritation. It seems that the inhaling the
dust is more of a worry. Maybe your cat is especially sensitive to it.
Just in case, I would definitely change litters immediately.

In the meantime, have you treated the wound? I would clean it once very
thoroughly with hydrogen peroxide, then apply iodine or betadine to
reduce the chance of infection. Peroxide should only be used once, or
again if the wound becomes very dirty, because it cleans away the good
and the bad stuff that's going on. It does not allow a scab to form.

If it starts looking infected -- beg, borrow, or steal to get your cat
to the vet!
