Well, tomorrow the movers are coming, so I may be
computerless for a couple of days, until I get it hooked up
again. Melisande and Cendrillon are being boarded at their
new vets. (Actually, the "Pet Lodge" affiliate of their new
vet.) I find they are far less stressed out if I can board
them for a few days around a move, so they avoid the worst
of the chaos at both locations. (Also, much less danger of
Melly, my "escape artist" managing to sneak out around the
furniture going out or coming in.)
I had the movers pack a good portion of my stuff today. (As
usual, they managed to pack some stuff - like my kitchen
towels - that I hadn't finished using, yet!) So I'll again
be dealing with a lot of unlabeled boxes, playing guessing
games when I look for stuff I need. Oh well, this too shall
pass - and I don't have to pay pet rent at my new place,
(although the pet deposit was rather steep).
Hope I won't have TOO many messages to catch up on, when I
get the computer up and running again. >> Stay informed about: Moving Day |

Good luck with the move! I'm glad you're leaving that lousy apartment,
with the roaches in the dishwasher and the amenities you're paying for
but can't use. I hope your new place is much better!

I started reading in the middle and thought for a moment that
you had a cat named after George Melly.
If anybody ever deserved to have a cat named after him, Melly
did. Amazing character.

Thanks! So far so good - the rent amount I'm paying
includes one meal a day in the central dining room, and I do
my own breakfasts (and lunch, if any) in my apartment's own
kitchen. (I like my nice, strong, European style coffee
much better than any in American restaurants, and that first
cup in the morning is a MUST.) The food is good, and the
menu offers choices - unlike some retirement facilities I've
encountered, where everyone got the same meal, and the only
alternative was something like a cheese sandwich. I've
shared tables with several different people, and had
enjoyable conversations with them - last night, two of us
were so involved in our conversation that the staff started
dimming the lights, as a signal that mealtime was over, and
they wanted to finish up and go home! She is a fellow
cat-person, of course - her cat walks with her to the dining
room, then waits by the pool and accompanies her home again.
(It really does, when we walked out of the dining-room,
there he was, waiting for her - a beautiful black and white
long-hair.)
My air-conditioning isn't working too well - cools for a
while, then starts blowing hot air - but I've put off
unpacking until tomorrow (when they're supposed to fix it),
because my apartment is bearable with just the ceiling fans
(and the blinds closed), so long as I don't exert myself too
much. Rather than getting stressed out over it, I called
the boarding kennel and arranged to leave the cats there
over the weekend, instead of picking them up tomorrow. That
should give me time to get a few boxfuls put away, so they
can't get into quite so much mischief.
I miss my babies, but I know they're being cared for, and
cats being cats, I know they're experiencing a lot less
stress there than in the chaos of unpacking, here. >> Stay informed about: Moving Day |

Well, it's important to make connections with the fellow cat-people
as soon as you set down in a new place. :)
It's nice that they allow people to let their cats out of their
apartments. Even if you would prefer not to let your cats out, this
way you'll get to meet some of your neighbors' cats.

Theoretically, we're not SUPPOSED to let them out, but it's
nice to know people do. Certainly the area is safe enough -
the campus is quite large, most of the buildings are
separated by rest areas and pedestrian walkways, the few
roads/alleys among care sections have a 5MPH speed limit,
and drivers are cautious. (Some of the oldsters wandering
about the grounds are not entirely aware of what's going on
around them, since various portions of the complex are for
people requiring different levels of care.) Before letting
my girls out, I want to be sure that A) they know exactly
where they live, and B) it really is okay with management to
let them out. >> Stay informed about: Moving Day |

It really sounds like you found a great place. And how nice with the cat
who follows his hoomin to the dining room.

Better late than never...
Although my bed and bed linens and bathroom stuff take precedence, the
computer is always the first thing I get right to work on! Having been a
tech (albeit a software tech) I can hook up my computer in a matter of
minutes. I haven't moved since I switched to a DSL connection a few years
ago. But I imagine it's just a phone call and a day or so at most before
the service would be switched to the new location (I'd call ahead). I still
have a regular modem just in case. Gotta keep in touch with my Usenet pals!
(snip nice sounding boarding place for Melisande & Cendrillon)

I didn't have anyone to pack up my stuff (this was 10 years ago). I packed
it all and labelled the boxes exactly where they should be placed in the new
apartment. Heck, I'd even used an architectural drawing program and figured
out exactly where my furniture should be placed. LOL
When I got to the apartment it was immediately apparent the aforementioned
land-line wasn't working. My elderly dog Sampson was at the vet; he'd
become critically ill that morning. I had to be able to reach them and vice
versa! So I went to the apartment office and used their phone. It was
close to 5PM and the phone company rep said she didn't think she could get
someone out there that night. I burst into tears, explaining how old and
how ill they thought my dog was. 30 minutes later a pet-loving phone
technician showed up and fixed the problem. (Turned out the previous tenant
had installed a completely not allowed security system that was hard-wired
into the phone line. So when the phone company switched on my service it
didn't work until the tech disconnected whatever.)
Meanwhile, back at the ranch... my oldest brother who was "helping me move"
(HA!) told the movers I'd hired to just pile all the boxes up in the front
bedroom. He told them to ignore what I'd written on the boxes just to
expedite matters, since I was paying them by the hour. I came back and
found him sitting in the dining area having a beer (my beer!) with them!
Excuse me, it's not like *he* was the one paying them! I was soooo angry!
I couldn't find the box with bath soap, shampoo and towels until 10:00 that
night. I finally located it under two rather heavy boxes of books. I was
tired, I was worried about my dog (yes, they pulled him through!). All I
wanted at that point was a nice hot shower and to crawl into bed. I was
exhausted. If the box had been placed in the "Master Bathroom" as labelled
I wouldn't have spent *hours* searching for those few basic items. Thank
all the dieties they'd at least put my box of bed linens in the master
bedroom before my brother gave them such idiotic instructions.
