I have a mouse that is about 2 years old, and despite having ruffled fur, a
missing ear, and having a slightly harder time pulling himself up than he
used to---is in excellent health! (ie: he doesn't have any raspy breathing,
no debilitating arthritis, not prone to sickness, etc)
He is the oldest mouse I've ever had... Most of my mice die at about 1 and a
half years, and by that time they are EXTREMELY worn out old mousies that
can't hardly get around. Not this mousie.
I do have a question: Can I expect him to live another year? Another 6
months? At what age does a mouse's longevity become unheard of?
As a side note, I would like to say that this mouse has been fed a steady
diet of whatever I have eaten, plus extra hard items to ensure tooth health.
This diet has included fair amounts of chocolate, hard candy, Coca-Cola,
wine, chicken, ice cream, and even marijuana stems. I am tempted to believe
that even though my mousie has had perhaps a less healthy diet, that his
longevity may be partly due to all the variety he has been exposed to. Not
to mention, he runs free on a piano modified with a ramp that runs top to
bottom. All kinds of toys and obstacles. So, does anyone have any comment on
that? Has my mousie lived longer on account of being an extra happy mousie,
with an extra challenged mind?
Anyway, just wanted to share that and maybe hear some answers/opinions. >> Stay informed about: Mouse about 2 years old |

all i can say is that i have heard tale about mice who have lived to be over
5 years old. not all that common, most only live to be about 2, if they're
lucky.. but there are apparently a few really old ones out there.. no one
knows why... >> Stay informed about: Mouse about 2 years old |

I have a mouse, Chicory, who is two years and ten months old. His fur is
thin and faded, he has cataracts in his eyes, his tail doesn't grip as
well as it used to, and his joints seem stiff. But aside from his
amusingly decrepit appearance, he seems healthy and I expect him to live
to his third birthday. He is the last survivor from his litter; their
lifespans ranged from about 1.5-2.5 years.
I think that if they get lucky and avoid the cancer that tends to to start
felling them around age 1.5, three years is not unheard of.

Most mice are short-lived because of 1)bad diet, or 2)wood shaving or
newspaper bedding.
Your mouse probably hasn't had a chance to miss any nutrients, as he
gets such a variety. As far as bedding, always use a non-softwood based
bedding (like Carefresh). Corn cob is nice too (at least to mix), as it
absorbs more ammonia than any other type of bedding. Softwoods (even
pine) contain phenols, which is the cleaning agent in Pine-Sol, and
HIGHLY toxic. These chemicals are also what give cedar and pine their
pleasant scent. >> Stay informed about: Mouse about 2 years old |

Try Cell-Sorb if you can find it. It's a harder newspaper pellet than
Carefresh, less dusty and messy, and absorbs much better than corncob. Also,
unlike corncob, it doesn't mold in 2 days when it gets peed on.
