Archived from groups: alt>pets>mice (more info?)

I've recently begun trying to raise my own mice, attempting to breed a special
strain in honor of my nephew for a "special Christmas present" at some future
point. Well, two of them got into a pretty bad fight, one of them almost died.
I'm hearing impaired and wasn't watching them at the moment, so I guess I just
didn't hear all the commotion. Anyway, the one that almost died is getting
better, but now his face is going this funky "throb" thing. It's like the skin
on his face became separated and now there's a "leak" or something between his
sinuses and skin. The effect is somewhat like a fuzzy white blow frog. His
head throbs in time with his breathing. Anyone know anything about this? I
mean to be honest, I think it's cute as heck, but yet if it's something that's
going to cause problems for him, I'm not sure what to do. Should I poke a hole
in the skin, or would the resulting leak from his sinuses to the outer world
risk infection? I mean he doesn't appear to have developed any infections in it
right now, and I suppose he would have by now (it's been about 2 days). Is it
something that might go away eventually?

Well, that's one question, but I did think of another one. I've been dealing
with a lot of mice trying to get my population started, so I've seen a death or
two from various causes as I've gone alone. I've noticed that sometimes a mouse
will stay apart from the group and bury itself in the litter. The two that this
has happened two would be very cold if I tried picking them out of the litter -
cold & slow moving. They'd usually die within 2 days or so. Is this just a
general "going off somewhere alone to die" behavior when they're sick, or is
this indicative of a specific kind of sickness?

Any and all responses appreciated. Thanks! :-)

Please take this mouse to a vet and don't try and fix it yourself.

Thanks

and Good luck

I've observed this frequently in dying mice. they leave, looking for something
to end their misery. good behavior in the wild, keeps the nest cleaner.

no. take him to a vet and get a good evaluation done. he may be able to live
with it, or he may have a serious problem developing. have it checked out.

Thanks to you and the other who replied. The throbbing face finally seems to
have abated, so I don't think there will be a problem. But it really freaked me
for awhile. Thanks again! :-)
