Post subject: Mouse Death :(
Archived from groups: alt>pets>mice (more info?)

I've never posted here; my pet's death has me terribly upset and
I'm not sure why my mouse died, and am looking for answers.

On Saturday, I went to the Pet Store to buy gerbil food, and ended up
buying a feeder mouse because I didn't want it to be eaten by a
snake. I named the mouse Rizzo, and paid a lot of attention to it; I
bought it a separate aquarium and I even put together a little maze
out of pieces I bought from PetCo.

I thought the mouse was healthy. The only thing different from my
mouse and my gerbils was that my mouse constantly made these clicking
sounds. I thought maybe that is how mice behave, so I continued to
play with my mouse and let him crawl all over me. I played with
Rizzo every day for about a half hour to an hour. I let him out and
let him play in a small pen. I fed him Forti-Diet food that said the
food was designed for rats and mice. He nibbled on some wheat bread
earlier this week, and also some rice. I didn't think these would be
harmful (I googled to check and see if they were harmful, but didn't
come up with anything -- some of the care lists didn't mention any bad
foods), and he seemed to like eating them as opposed to the Forti-Diet
food, which he rarely nibbled on.

Today, I came home from work and the first thing I checked on was the
mouse and its health. To my horror, Rizzo was lying on his side at
the base of the cage. He was still somewhat warm and twitching when
I picked him up. I wasn't sure if he was sleeping, or if something
was wrong, so I pet him a little and poked him gently to see if he'd
respond. He twitched out of my hand and fell onto the table. So, I
set him straight, and tried to get him to drink some water. I never
had to feed a mouse with a dropper before, but I tried to see if
maybe this was because he was dehydrated and tired. I rushed to the
car, to get my phone to call a vet, and by the time I came back,
Rizzo was lifeless and stopped moving.

Did I do something wrong to cause Rizzo's death? I read a book on
mice before attempting to tame him; what could have happened that
could have caused a seemingly healthy mouse to become ill and die? I
have two gerbils and they have been with me for almost a year with no
problems. Is it because Rizzo was a feeder mouse, that his health
was so frail? Do mice normally make clicking sounds when exploring?

Rest in peace, Rizzo.

I'm sorry to hear about your little friend.
RIP Rizzo.

You did give him a very good life.

I do think that the fact that Rizzo was a feeder mouse was the reason he
did not live as long. I think that even if the mice are food they should
be kept in good conditions, so they can have a good life as long as it
lasts, but of course pet shops are not bothered about the feeder animals.
Some of these pet shops don't care about the conditions of animals they
sell as pets as well. Breeders tend to look after their animals better.
I get my mice from a pet rescue. I feel it is good to have pets that have
been rescued and need a new home rather then just buying a pet that is
being sold in a pet shop.

I like female mice, most can live together unlike most males that will
fight and are less smelly.

Mice don't normally make much noise aside from the occasional squeak. A
clicking sound is usually the symptom of a respiratory infection. This can
sometimes be controlled with antibiotics. I have had two mice die from
respiratory infections, so I sympathize. Unfortunately, if your mouse was
sick, it's likely that every mouse in that tank at the pet store was also
sick.

I'm sorry about Rizzo. If you had not bought him, he probably would have
died either in a crowded cage at the pet store or as snake food. Instead, he
spent his last week in a nice cage with toys, food, and attention.

no. I've had many mice, and usually they live the normal lifespan, but
sometimes they'll just up and die for no visible reason. in addition feeder
mice can be weak to begin with.

bread and rice are not harmful to mice, and nothing else in your description
seems wrong. rizzo sounds like he had a good time, so remember him that way.

There was a discussion a few months ago about this and some people claimed
that this sound was the mouse "singing." My sister's had mice who have
done that and been perfectly healthy. Maybe we're talking about different
sounds, though. Do you mean a sort of "chattering" sound?

Yes, it can sound like a chattering sound (which I think can also be
described as clicking). It can go on for many months as a chronic thing
before the mouse becomes obviously ill. One of my mice made the noise for a
long time, and it would come and go as various antibiotics were tried, but
eventually she went into a gasping fit and then succumbed.

I have never heard a mouse make the "singing" noise that people have
described on this group. I wonder whether it is a genuine vocal noise or if
it's actually a chronic respiratory problem like my mouse had. However,
since I haven't heard it, I can't really guess either way. In any case,
respiratory illness is extremely common in pet mice, especially ones that
have lived in crowded conditions such as pet stores. I would urge anyone
whose mouse makes "chattering" noises to have it checked by a vet,
particularly if the noise happens most of the time.

It's a sort of clicking chirping sound and it's quite rare for mice to do
this, and usually, (from my experience anyway,) it slows down or stops
altogether when they mix with new mice.
It's definately NOT an ailment, because one of mine, i beautiful satin grey
has done it since i got her when she was a baby and she's almost 10 months
old now, but dosent 'sing' as much now as she did when she was very young.

Thanks to all that posted regarding Rizzo. I feel a lot better. I haven't
gone to get another mouse just yet. I took Rizzo's toys and pen and
connected it to my gerbil's pen instead.

Those clumsy gerbils are a lot less acrobatic than Rizzo was; they can't
climb the pen walls, or crawl down the table legs. :-) They have a
completely different personality than my mouse had. I miss that mouse. He
was so tiny, but was so much more interactive with me. For some reason, he
was very easy to tame. When I put my hand in the cage, he always crawled on
it and sat there and patiently awaited being lifted out. Then, he wouldn't
just run away, he'd slowly look around and play. I've tried to get that
kind of calm social behavior out of my gerbils forever. They just like to
wrestle with each other, wait for food, and like to make nests here and
there. The joy of rodents. :)

Thanks again.

Hi, T D

Sorry to hear your mouse died. I used to have one with an infection that
made the same kind of clicking sound - before I knew what that was, it
recovered.

I had mice many years ago, great fun ! If you feel you have the time it
takes to keep them, try again !

Midnight has made chattering sounds, when she has been on her own before,
for few minutes. Midnight was born at home in a cage that was not crowded.
Midnight does not do this anymore now she lives with Twinkle and
Starlight. When she did make this sound, she looked healthy as normal.
Moonlight, Midnight's mum, used to do this chattering, nearly all the time
and when a male mated her, she chattered even more. She lived with other
mice. Then one day she just stopped and did not chatter ever again.
Moonlight did come from a pet shop where loads of mice got put in one
cage. Midnight does not do the chattering anymore.

I had been told that if mice have a breathing problem, they would have a
stuffed up nose, is this true in this case?

Moonlight and midnight have never had a stuffed up nose, and when they
have chattered before, they have always looked healthy mice.

I have never noticed any of my mice with stuffed up noses, or with runny
noses for that matter, but having said that, this dosent mean they dont get
them - I've just never noticed any of mine having these symptoms - maybe
I've been lucky up to now, touch wood!!

As far as the chattering is concerned, the few I've noticed that do vocalise
this way, have tended to stop when mixed with cage mates, but occasionally
they still do make it, during cage cleaning etc or any other times when i
seperate them for any reason.

I haven't had my mouse long, so I haven't heard chattering before. I figured
if he did it was like hamsters do when they get annoyed with something. I
know hamsters and mice are different, but I figured this because of both
being in the rodent family.
