Wow, this group is quiet lately but I'm hoping someone is still reading out
there. I have a mouse dilemma.

I've had mice for a few years and was determined to "get out of mice" as I
was getting weary from the short life span and needed a break. Two months
ago the 2nd to last of my 5 mice died, and I was left with one. Well... you
all know what happens and I couldn't let her live alone indefinitely so in
came two young females.

At the time I got the new females some things happened in my family that
took me away from home for long periods, and while someone was always here
caring for the mice, they did not get properly socialized.

Tonight the last of my "original 5" died, I think of a brain tumor. She had
a siezure and dropped dead. Now I have these two young females, about 3
months old, who are just about wild. They will take a treat from my hand
occasionally, but just take it and run. Even catching them to clean the
cage is tough. They've never bitten, but they are more terrified of me than
any mice I've ever had.

Question is, is it too late for these girls? Is socializing them going to
take hours and hours a day? How should I go about it. I have never had
mice be so anti-human, except one who would squint and run away every time
she smelled me. I learned to love her for the human-fearing girl she was,
and appreciated her good qualities.

These new girls are super cute and super active which is so nice after
watching so many old mice die recently.

Advice?
Thanks,
Meghan

I think if they're taking treats from your hand that's a good thing.
Obviously every mouse has their own personality, but three months
probably isn't irrevocable. It might take hours and hours, but not for
too long.

I've a girl we raised from a baby (we got her from Petco, and think
she's probably a feral) and no matter how many times I try to hold her,
she always cries "Eeeee! Eeeee!" and runs everywhere, smashing into the
other mice. I think the biggest question is, if they're sitting in your
hand, do they stay there? Or do they scream "Eeeeeee!" and try to run
for Canada, biting every finger that tries to stop them? (We call her
Ante, as in Ante-social.) If they can sit in your hand, they can
probably learn to like it.

These girls are from Petco, and I've gotten other mice there and I guess I
was lucky because those mice seemed pretty tame. They are very picky and
today will not take treats from my hand - they sniff my hand and squint,
walk away, I drop the treat and they run back to get it. I had another
mouse who did that and she never changed. sigh.

Admittedly I don't have very good patience and I guess I need to just pull
up a chair and hold my hand in the cage for a while and let them decide on
their own. When I take them out for the cage cleaning they run like mad,
although I've never heard any noises from them. I wouldn't say they exactly
SIT in my hand (more like crawl around trying to find a way off my hand) but
the encouraging thing is they've never bitten me so maybe there is a chance.

Good to see someone else is reading this group!
