Archived from groups: alt>pets>rodents (more info?)

We have had mice for less than a year - we have two females who live
together in a cage.

Today we noticed that one of them (the one who seems most dominant) has a
scab on it's tail. Looks like a bite mark on the last centimetre or so of
it's tail and as a result it's tail as a kink in it where the scab is.

The mouse seems as happy as always and is running around, eating and
drinking normally.

Is this something we should worry about or do mice get these little injuries
and they heal up without any problem?

We have caught the two fighting once or twice, but I guess this is normal
from time to time when they live together. They always have enough food but
sometimes they snatch it from each other rather than go and get their own
LOL

Thanks

And don't worry about the kink, either. That happened to one of my mice
when she was little. She now has 2 nearly 90 degree turns in her tail, one
half way down, the other near the end, but neither seems to have stopped her
from being happy or healthy. And, as a result, she was named "Bender" lol

Thanks both

It seems to be healing well on it's own and is definately not swolen, so all
seems well. That's a relief.

Is there anything that can be done to stop them fighting? If we see them we
break them up, but we are not there all the time. They always have enough
food, but as I said in the OP, they sometimes fight over a particular piece
of food even though there is more left.

Thanks again

Some mice just don't get on with other mice although it's rare to find
females with so much aggresiveness.
Are you sure it's proper fighting and not just playing?

proper fighting usually results in scratches under the fur and bleeding ears
etc.
Do they have enough room? - try extending the cage by adding another level
if possible or if not, put in plenty of hiding places, plantpots, jars,
eggboxes and cardboard and plastic tubing - I've had cages which upon first
glance look like a pile of rubbish! but the mice will love climbing under,
over and through it all and they really enjoy having small plantpots to sit
in while they are dining - they are enclosed on all sides and can relax
while keeping a watchful eye to the front in case of muggers!

What food are they getting? - if there's meat in their diet it could be
causing aggressive behaviour...

exercise wheels can bend tails too.

We assumed it was fighting - lots of scuffling about and high pitch
sqeaking/squealing. Nothing too serious and we always broke them up when we
saw them. Maybe they are just playing.

Their cage is pretty big, so I will put lots more stuff in there for them to
climb on/in.

No meat in their diet. The thing they scuffle over most are sunflower
seeds - we always put lots of these in with their food as they seem to
really like them, but one will be eating a bit, and even though there is a
pile of them left, the other seems to want that particular one so a scuffle
and a chase sometimes ensues when it gets snatched LOL

Thanks
