Hi all,
The breeder I am getting my puppy from just contacted me, and asked if I was
willing to trade for a girl. Apparently one of the families with
reservations for a boy had kids who were very disapointed at not getting a
puppy as there weren't enough boys to go around.
I kinda had my heart set on a boy, but that is only an irrational decision,
based on a few scant readings on male vs female behavior. So anyone got any
pros and cons of male vs female? This will be my first dog. I am single, no
kids.

So, thoughts?

Dale

Hey Dale...

I think all the feedback you will hear about boy vs. girl is purely
anecdotal. I've heard some say that girls are less "lovey" and prefer more
time on their own. That is not the case with our Libby, who will forgo all
food and other pleasures for a simple pat on the head.

We sure love our girl, but I grew up with some wonderful boys, too. We
spayed her, so breeding was not an issue for us.

You'll be happy no matter what...because I can tell how much you're looking
forward to having a puppy!

1 yr. old Libby's family...from Spirit Lake, Iowa Go Hawkeyes!

Kinda figured, but anecdotal evidence is better than nothing at all, right?

while there are cases where a girl acts like a boy and vica versa, there are
definite gender differences between males and females.

some of those can be mininze or exaggerated via interaction or training, for
the most part they remain.

with my babies:

Colin, the boy, is the perfect speciem of the stereotypical male, he is quite
lazy, mainly eats, sleeps and poops all the time, is a very jealous of my wife
and who she gives attention to. Also he is very low key, for the most part
non-demanding, BUT there are certain things that if they are not right he
raises hell about. Also he is totally regular about everything, likes
everything done at the same time every day

Lyse, the girl, is the perfect speciem of the worst stereotypical female, she
is very high maintanence, requires 24x7 attention, has to be in the middle of
everything, is very emotionally sensitive the slighest thing gets her upset or
in a mood.

I've decided to stick with a boy. Thanx for your input.

I've had both. The female was more independent than my male that I have
now. She was a wonderful dog and would try anything. My male is a little
slower to try new things and he is much more dependent. If I was going to
get another, I would choose a male again.

I have a boy and wouldnt trade him for anything. He's big and dumb and
likes to follow me around the house and wait outside the bedroom for
me when I get ready in the morning. And he likes to jump in bed and
share my pillow at night. He's the best! Oh yeah, he loves to eat.
