Hi, I have a four month old double merle border collie pup. When we got him from the family that bred them and brought him home I realised within the space of a couple of hours that he was deaf. After having vet check with our vet he confirmed this and that he also may go blind in his one eye.
After contacting the breeder he told me I could bring him back for a different dog. We had obviously fallen completely in love with him and couldn't be parted. To be fair to the guy he had no clue of what he had done by breeding two merle border collies together, we didn't either until we looked into it on the internet. We only saw the mother who was merle, unfortunately it was just poor breeding knowledge. His deafness is not proving a problem and he is learning very well and has the most lovely temperament.
However the poor little thing has started having problems putting weight on his rear legs and they look like they are not strong enough to support his weight recently. We have taken him to the vet who said he thought it may be neurological and that he didn't have a lot of feeling in his rear legs.
We have had the xrays of his spine done and although they picked up an abnormality at the bottom of his spine it was inconclusive and the vet has said that both she and the specialist think it is congenital and that although we could have an MRI it would be a bad conclusion, ie nothing would be able to be done about it, also our insurance does not cover this problem as they are relating it to his pre-existing conditions.
After confirming with the vet that they think he is in no pain, we are going to help him get around and he is having a cart made by a great guy in the uk. The way I look at it is that he is a happy little pup, he plays with our other dogs but just needs a little help to get around on walks. We don't know what the future may hold for him but for as long as we have the pleasure of his company I intend making his life a quality one.
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced a similar thing?
