We almost lost our cockatiel yesterday. His wings are not clipped.
It was cold and windy outside. Snow flurries on and off.
I was outside cleaning his cage and he got out the door when my wife
brought me a green garbage bag. It looked like he was just trying to
get to his cage, but a stiff breeze caught him.
He struggled for a good two minutes trying to get back to the house,
but the wind kept taking him higher and higher until we finally lost
sight of him
Search parties quickly dispatched. We concentrated our search to the
east where the wind would have likely carried him with no luck. After
almost two hours, we branched the search out to behind our house and
to the west.
About three blocks from our house as I continued to search the side
streets on foot as I turned a corner I heard a chirp. In retrospect,
I was in line of site of him. I called everybody else on the cell
phone and we all converged on the area. I ran towards the chirp and
heard another. I called his name and he started wildly chirping and
whistling.
I ran around the corner and into the back yard of where the noise was
coming from. I was looking up but I could not see him. I told my wife
who just arrived to let the owners of the house know what we were all
doing in their yard. My wife then spotted him high up in a tree.
I went to the base of the tree wondering how I was going to climb it
as it was so high. After a few seconds, he started hopping down the
branches and came down to me then climbed into my winter coat.
I just wanted to share this story to for two reasons .... to help
others not become complacent about open doors and their birds ... even
if the bird does not intend to escape he can get easily lifted away by
the breeze. Also, if you do loose your bird, do not limit your search
to where the wind would blow the bird .... I am really surprised he
made is so far against such a strong breeze.
