Post subject: Insect Collection Cruelty
Archived from groups: talk>politics>animals (more info?)

My son is a freshman in a Christian High School. This school has a long
tradition of making an insect collection a large part of the Biology
curriculum. Each student is expected to catch, kill and mount as large
a variety of insects as possible. I believe that this is wrong on many
levels. First, it teaches disrespect for life. Second, it is
ecologically irresponsible. Third, it is an ineffective and
time-consuming way to teach one of the most unimportant aspects of
biology.

Can you help me convince my son's teacher that what he is doing is
wrong? A Google search was very unfruitful, and only produced some
anti-PETA articles from FOX news. I don't get it- this approach to
biology is so wrong and outdated, why am I the only one up in arms?

Thanks.

Because you are a shrill, braindead loony-toon that has nothing
better to do with their time.
The entireity of your life rests on the death and suffering of
far many more bugs, not to mention mammals, birds, reptiles, fish
and amphibians than your sons biology class will ever kill.
Hell, even your inane post to usenet contributed to the death and
suffering of far more animals than any biology class will affect.
You are a loser. You are a killer. You are a hypocrite, fool.

So ricky....if he *didn't* post to usenet, how many bugs' lives would
be saved?

(p.s. Are you the bug genius now?)

You have some peer reviewed studies to cite Mr. Bug Genius?

How *do* you do it etter? Field Mouse Genius, Cow Food Expert, and now
Bug Genius......and you still find time to go to a farm and select the
specific bovine you want slaughtered for it's udder and murder burgers.

Just where do you find the time etter? You are such a busy boy.

Did you talk to the teacher?

If you haven't raised this objection with the teacher, what do you
expect any of us to do about it?

You may think it's silly or hypocritical of Phred to be worrying about
these
insects but can you explain how the students are learning anything
useful
from the process?

No but what useful knowledge could such a collection be
used to teach?

===================
I could see all kinds of things. Each 'collection' will no doubt
be different. Each insect, and its place in the environment can
be discussed with real examples of it, and the insects it
interacts with in a real-world setting. far more teachable than
any dry, boring look at a book and try to imagine each insect,
and their interactions. That you have a closed-minded view of
the use of animals is typical of AR loons. Again, like I asked
the OP, why all the concern for what amounts to only dozens of
bugs when your lifestyle, including posting to usenet,
contributes to the death of millions upon millions of insects,
AND mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians?

Already have. You, on the other hand, have brought nothing but
emotive foolishness to the discussion.
You refused to even try to see any use, so immediately its
'wrong.'
