My 1 year old sheltie wiped out a couple of months ago whe we were
playing ball. She favors her hind leg now and when she runs she
sometimes lifts it and runs on 3 legs. It's hard to keep her quiet.
I had it checked today by my vet and she said it is a cranial crutiate
injury. I had just started agility classes yesterday so that is over
for the season. Sometimes she seems better but I guess it will take a
long time to heal. Has anybody had experience with this?

My vet examined Chelsea and came up with the diagnosis. She did talk
about the different options and stressed no physical exercise. I
couldn't take it all in at the time so I must have another talk with
her this week. I read up on the website that you suggested and it's
very interesting and also scarey. Chelsea will walk without a limp on
a normal walk but when she runs she will lift her hind leg and getting
up from laying she will limp at times. Of course there is no more
running now but it's hard to stop her from doing the odd jumping
around.

By putting off surgery, her other leg is at risk. Over time she will rely on
it more and more, extra stress and weight bearing causing possibly a CL
injury in that leg as well and/or other orthopedic problems. Sometimes just
coming down the stairs or getting off the sofa will be what causes the
injury to the prone leg.

Talk to the vet again, get a 2nd opinion if need be.

Thanks everybody for the responses to my post. I'm a lot more
informed now and in hindsight I would have done things a lot
different. I would have taken her to the vet a lot sooner but I
thought she sprained her leg and it would get better. I'm hoping for
a complete recovery but time will tell. ;-)
