Archived from groups: alt>pets>rodents>rats (more info?)

Alright. It's July 4th and our normal pet store was closed. I promised
YS that we'd get the babies a new cardboard castle. (Doing cardboard
until lice free!) So we walked into Petco. BIG mistake!

Of course I walked right over to the rat cages. Usually they only have
PEWs in all the tanks. Today they have a beautiful little black self
boy (8-10wks.?) who was lying on top of his igloo- on his face. He was
breathing very fast and shallow. He had a little poryphin on his nose,
but not too much, but he just didn't look right. He seemed listless
and weak. I got a clerk and told her that this rat is sick- what are
you going to do about it?? I got the brush off. "We'll take care of
it!"
"It"..hmmph.

I absolutely cannot afford to buy this guy to bring him to the vet. I
dipped a little into my vet fund for the babies- and if this guy is as
bad as he looked to me, he's going to ring up the vet bills. I'm
talking to a rescue about adopting two spayed girls most likely next
week, so heavens forbid one of mine gets sick...

But I can't not do anything either. So what do I do?? Can I make them
take their sick rat to the vet? Is there a place I can call to make
sure someone does something about it?

I plan on going back tomorrow morning to see if he is still there- if
something has been done, but I know myself too well. I will end up
doing the totally irresponsible *right* thing and bring him home if
nothing is being done about treating him. He looked so sad, so sick.
It broke my heart... I wanted to at least pick him up and hold him,
but I didn't want to transfer whatever he may have to my babies.

So what can I do?
-Michaela :(

Yeah I'd take him home too. I can't ignore an animal in need. Hmmm...
is there a rescue group who can provide antibiotics for free... if you
explain the situation and maybe offer to make a donation to cover the
cost of the antibiotics (which would be HEAPS cheaper than what a vet
will charge). Over here there is one rat rescue group which does
this... she can't sell the antibiotics but will give it for free for
rescues.

It is best to bring him home and show him what true love really is than to
leave him there and know he will suffer alone.

Leaving him there will definately not get him any love or a chance at vet
care.

If you get him, I can at least offer to send a bag of food this Friday to
offset some of the cost.

A lot is learned from a broken heart and a broken heart is not always a bad
thing.

There is a lot to be teached and learned about for fellow family members who
may be honored to be in the presence of this wonderful little life.

Do what YOU feel is the right thing for you.

Hi Michaela,

I really didn't mean to guilt trip you. Just throwing an idea out
there on how to get cheap antibiotics. By donation I ment about $5.
You're doing what you can to help out, even with looking after your
original two ratties, and your soon to be rescues will be living with
you soon. Hopefully the rescue can help this little guy out, but as
you said, there are another 5 rats at the pet store in a similar
dilemma. It really is heart breaking, but I understand that we can
only do as much as we can financially and even emotionally handle. :)

I have an email in to the rescue I am getting my girls from. Hopefully
someone will respond tonight or in the morning. A friend emailed me
back and told me that our Petco is usually pretty good about bringing
animals to the vet. Apparently, the one near me has someone come in
everyday from our local animal shelter who adopts out cats and dogs-
but they are a very proactive shelter so if all else fails I can call
them. (Personally I don't like Petco- I like to support my locals)

Hopefully the decision to bring him home won't have to be made. I'm
certainly not going to bring him home if the vet bills will exceed my
fund because then my kids will be eating Ramen noodles. When I said I
can't afford it, I truly meant it. It's not the matter of missing
movie night this week. 10 years ago he would've been in my pocket-
damn the consequences, but I also know that it isn't fair to bring
home an animal you can't afford to take care of!!

We also have a 13 yr. old dog, my DH's dog before we were married,
who's hips are going, who has lost 5lbs. this past week- who is most
likely going to need to go to the vet very soon.

But, like I said, I will not do nothing either. If I have to buy him
and bring him to the rat rescue a couple hours away, I will. I will
see what they say.

I wasn't sure if someone knew of a number, like to the ASPCA or
similar, that can be contacted if Petco doesn't seem like they are
going to take care of this little baby. So many times you get the
"It's just a rat." response or attitude. "They're a dime a dozen." I'm
worried that a pet store isn't going to dish out hundreds on vet bills
for an animal they are only going to get $8 for. Ooooww, this drives
me nuts!!

Believe me, my heart and mind are tugging. If I had more than $175. in
my bank account he'd be home already in a blanket in my lap. I chose
to stay home with my kids, until September when YS begins school, and
I accepted the consequences of being a one income family.
Unfortunately, money, not love, makes the world go round. :(

Thank you, Samantha, for the food offer. It isn't neccesary.

I will keep you posted. I'm going to drive back out there tomorrow
morning to see what's going on. Hopefully when I start slinging around
words like ASPCA, animal welfare, cruelty to animals, a big banner on
my website protesting... Maybe I'll be surprised and it won't even be
neccesary. How much did you say I can buy the Brooklyn Bridge for?
Off to bed. Good night all!

The problem with the *right thing* is that it's all relative. :)

It's not fair to him to have to die there, (and I will do everything
in my power to not let that happen) but it's not fair to the two rats
who are in a foster home waiting for me, if I bring him home. It's
also not fair to the rescue who is spaying them for me on my word that
I will take them home.

If he were my pet, there would be no question in my mind- If I had to
borrow the money & eat pb&j sandwiches for the next weeks, I would.
But my first responsibilities are the ones I have already promised to
take care of.

But my dilemma is not whether or not to bring him home, I cannot do
that, which sucks. It's what CAN I do?

Another thing that bothered me so much was that he WASN'T alone! He
was in one of those 10-gal tanks with 5 other rats!! The others were
all PEWs and slightly larger, so I'm pretty sure they aren't litter
mates- so shouldn't they have at least quarantined him? He definitely
wasn't in there when I went looking for Carbaryl powder all over the
island.

For what its worth I too, would have that Rattie home by now and put
getting others on hold. It would be nice for him to have known some love
before he leaves this world :( and you never know, with love and
kindness he just could get better too :)

Kind regards Kate

Sometimes it is a no win situation.

The main thing is to try your best,
whatever that may be.

I haven't gone out to Petco today yet to check on Small Fry, but I
will. If he is still ill, and they haven't had him seen- I will
contact Kim's Ark again and see if I can bring him up to their
Braintree, Mass location- which is about 1 1/2 hours from me. If
anything, send them what you would have donated for gas since it will
cost them much more to get him treated than it will for me to drive
him there. I am very touched by your offer.
