We have mice or a mouse (probably mice) lol. Anyway my father put Decon
in the laundry room which I am opposed to. I hate killing the little
buggers. Tonight I was doing laundry and saw one of my little grey friends
with one of those vile green things in his mouth. I was screaming "spit it
out spit it out" lol. Finally I grabbed him and made him drop it, he almost
got away from me three times. I'm pretty good at catching little fast things
though. I put him in one of my old enclosures (I used to raiise both rats
and mice when I was a kid) Put some milk and water in there with him along
with some dog food. I know this isn't proper procedure in keeping rodents
but it's all I have right now.
Anyway...does anyone know how long it takes for the little one's to show
symptoms of poisoning? Right now he's acting like a normal mouse that's been
scared into it's next incarnation. It's probably been about an hour now. I
am so hoping I can save him. He's so cute. Any help would be
appreciated...thx :) >> Stay informed about: House Mouse |

If he's ingested any of the poison, there's little hope for him, he will
simply fall asleep and not wake up...it takes longer to work on mice than
rats, usually about 6-10 days, whereas rats are dead within 6 days after
ingestion..I don't know the specific poison used but assume it's one of the
anticoagulants? - they are fairly humane and he should not suffer.
If he is still alive in ten days time, let him go outside and get rid of the
poisons and buy a humane trap, they're fairly cheap. >> Stay informed about: House Mouse |

I was hoping he was going to be ok because he's not shown any of the
symptoms, (it's Warfarin btw) Vitamin K is supposed to be the antidote. And
supposedly they drink like crazy and he's not finished his little water tub.
He adores the food mix I made him though lol. At least it's humane and he'll
have a warm dry place and plenty of food and water until the end. I've
already decided to get some humane traps. I used to raise the little devils
and I just can't see them as anything other than pets. which makes it very
hard to deal with them being killed. >> Stay informed about: House Mouse |

Why not take the mouse to a wildlife rehab?
I used to work at one and I am sure they would take the mouse and help him
to heal.

If he has only ingested a very small amount he may survive, some wild
rodents build up a resistance to warfarin, however I wouldn't build your
hopes up as mice are very tiny and need only a few milligrammes to kill
them.
That said, you won't know for a week to ten days, you could get some vitamin
K, from where I don't know, and try fairly large doses in the hopes of
keeping him alive, best of luck! >> Stay informed about: House Mouse |

I'm always taking on stuff like this...abandoned baby birds, and runts
of just about anything. They never live and it always breaks my heart. You'd
think I'd learn lol. Everyone I know is already making fun of me for going
to this much effort and all are looking forward to his expiration date. I
don't know where I'd find vitamin K either. I know it's found in Spinach and
Broccoli but I'm sure it probably needs to be injected. A vet, which I
can't afford is the only source I can think of. I've got cans of spiniach
around I could feed him that but I doubt it'd be enough to do him any good.
He's fairly young going by appearnce. Still got the big head and downey fur.
He gets so full of mouse joy sometimes, just like my pet mice did. Little
bursts of energy, running about. Not a bad little jumper either. Such a
shame.

Blue is poisined.
She (yes, she's a female) has become sluggish. She no longer plays or
runs about and is mostly content to sit on my hand and be given water. She's
started drinking a lot. I guess even though her poops aren't green like the
other mice, she got just enough in her. She sits quietly and lets me stroke
her soft grey fur. I don't expect her to survive the night.
Thanks again for the advice and concern.
Blessings,
S. >> Stay informed about: House Mouse |

The really sad thing is I had finally tracked a rehabber down that was
willing to come out and pick her up. She was going to come today to get her.
But instead I had to email her at like 5AM telling her that Blue didn't make
it. I really thought I was going to save this one. I think that's what hurts
the most...failing. Not fast enough, not good enough...blah blah. Heh..guess
I should move this over to the greif petloss ng now. I've always wanted to
be in animal rescue, but I think my heart must be too tender to get so
attatched to a little one in so short a time. I keep thinking I have to get
up and give her water but she's not there anymore. :(
And I'm going to miss the mice this winter. I usually feed them under
the stairwell. They pay me back by letting me watch them. Which is nice in
the dead of winter when even the birds seem absent. I didn't this year and
this is the first year they came all the way into the house. So I feel
responsible for all these little deaths which right now seem so big.

S. >> Stay informed about: House Mouse |

I'm sorry to hear the mouse didn't make it. Drinking a lot is a common sign
of poisoning. For future reference, the antidote for Warfarin (a common
mouse/rat poison, probably what Blue ate) is Vitamin K. I don't know the
required dosage, though. Warfarin is an anticoagulant that causes them to
bleed to death internally. It's a nasty thing to do to a living creature.
