I'm considering taking a job that would require a lot of travel.

This would mean the cat would be alone for 4-5 days a week.

How would a cat cope with such a situation? How much would it help for
her to have a companion cat to relieve boredom and loneliness?

I couldn't give her up and bringing her along on trips, probably isn't
going to be possible.

Having two or more (personality compatable) cats will help a lot.

Depending on what "alone 4 -5 days a week" means, you could be asking for
big trouble though. Cats though independant are not savvy enough not to get
into situations where they need rescuing. 24 hours in that state and they
are just flustered. 72 and they could be dead. I would not try to keep a
cat as a single occupant and be away for 4 day stretches at a time on a
regular basis without a sitter. In some places, it could be against the law
as well...
