I have a 6 month male Bijon poodle cross - he is the most scared, wimpy,
afraid dog I have ever met.
I don't know what to do with him. 1st let me preface by saying. I have 3
kids (all girls - 6yrs and 2x2yrs) in the house and he is great with them &
he is great with my wife aswell. the kids interact with him with us present
only - so I dont believe there are any issues that we arent aware of there.
The problem with him seems to ONLY be me. He is scared to death of my voice.
Not my actions or movements or anything like that - but I do have a booming
voice. He seems to have a very hard time telling if I am mad or playing with
him - and the problem is - he pees & shakes and curls up when he thinks I am
mad at him. He will pee if he hears me scold the kids, and he will if I
scold him aswell. Tonight I came in the living room to play with him, and I
said "whos a good boy" - he looked at me, started shaking and sure enough -
peed on my couch. I should mention the he is not 100% toilet trained in the
house yet...but except for this seems pretty good.
History - he was sold to us after being bought from a kennel by these people
whos kids were afraid of him - so they sold him to us after a week of having
him.
Other then this - he seems to be normal, but he is very wimpy and very very
skittish. I really dont know what to do with him, or me as the case may
be.......
anyone direct me to some reading or give some advice? I really don't want
this to continue for his sake and mine....

My JRT is skittish around men, including my husband, and he was never
abused or neglected. My husband has to be very matter-of-fact and
neutral around Cooper to avoid turning on the sprinkler. No yelling,
certainly, and no exuberant greetings or praise either, unfortunately.
He's gotten better, calmer, more relaxed with maturity (he's 2 1/2 now),
and my husband has found ways to interact with Cooper that don't freak
him out. Look for some common interests. In the evening my husband
likes to sit on the couch and watch TV. Cooper likes to sit on people
who sit on couches and watch TV. My husband is also the only one who's
allowed to share tiny bits of people-food snacks with Cooper on the
couch. To a dog who eats twice a day and gets very few snacks, this is
huge.

Many dogs are afraid of men who tend to loom over them and, as
you say, have big booming voices.
My suggestions will probably involve a great deal of time.
First, don't force yourself upon the dog - even if he
voluntarily comes to you, be matter-of-fact. Happy, but not
smothering or forceful. Talk to hum like you're your 6 old
daughter, happy and high pitched. Sitting on the floor turned
sideways and not making eye contact makes you less fearful, too.
That was the tough part. The easy part is that you should feed
this dog from here on. He may not come to the bowl when you put
it down, but he'll know where it came from.
Good luck, and be patient.

Rocky,
Thats the thing though - 99 times out of a hundred if I am not talking to
hum, he will play with me or come to me....but if i start talking or
scolding...wham, here comes the dribble. Funny enough hes not always
scared - it must be something in my voice. Incedently, he has never acted
afraid of any other men he has been around - like my neighbour or my friends
or father in law......humm, this worries me a bit.

Kathleen,
Thanks, you have given some good ideas - some things I can do to maybe
increase the bond between him and I.

Why and how do you scold him? For the time being, you should be
"all things good" - if that means no talking or talking
differently, so be it. Carry his favourite treats in your
pocket, too. Even though 99 times out of a 100 he's OK with
you, the goal is 100 out out of a 100.

I know what you mean, but from a different direction - I've been
told often enough that "My dog doesn't like men, but he likes
you, Matt." Hmmmm. Compliment or insult?
And - please don't quote the Puppy Wizard or you'll find
yourself in as many killfiles as he.
