We took Daffy to the vet today. I just had this niggling suspicion that
something was wrong with her teeth. She's been eating as much as ever, seems
perfectly happy, running around, begging for food, just being herself.
But in the last few weeks I've noticed some subtle changes in the way she
eats her evening piece of carrot (which I hand-feed, just so that I can keep
an eye on how they're chewing). Instead of tearing off large chunks, she's
been a bit daintier, sometimes even dropping a tiny sliver. I checked her
incisors, but there was nothing - and it's very hard to have a close look
with an independent-minded madam like Daffy.
So we took her to the vet, and it turns out that the molars on one side have
grown quite long - she didn't use the term spurs, but maybe that's what she
meant? (she was very good with Daffy, and she drew us a picture to explain).
She said we caught it early and it doesn't quite touch the cheek yet, that's
why there hasn't been any dribbling.
Anyway, Daffy's going in to have them removed/filed down tomorrow morning.
The vet said that she's so feisty that she'll probably need " a proper,
serious dose of anaesthetics", which of course worries me quite a bit.
She'll be six in December...but like the vet said, she's strong and healthy.
So please send us some healing vibes tomorrow -and if anyone with experience
of this could tell me what I should be feeding her afterwards, I would
appreciate it. She's bad at eating hay, but I will do my best to change her
mind - what other fibre-rich foods would you suggest?
Feeling quite worried but trying not to,

Biskit has to have his molars filed down about every 6 weeks. He's over 9.5 years old....
I would be leery of any "serious dose" of anything! My vet has it tuned down to a very
fine and quick procedure. There's always a risk with anesthetics on a bunny. I've taken
him in before and had him back in an hour! Now, if there has been no abrasion to the
cheeks then a regular eating regime should be quickly forthcoming. At times in the past,
Biskit bit himself and after the surgery he tended to avoid hay for a few days - probably
too rough on his sore mouth. If your bun's problem is as described, there should be no
problems and no need to alter the diet.
BTW, I have managed to come pretty close to telling when it's time for his regular dental
visit. When he snuggles his little head in my hand and clacks his teeth, I pay attention
to the "clacks." Over a period of weeks they become sharper and when that happens I know
the time is at hand. >> Stay informed about: Healing vibes for Daffy, please. |

Of course, Karin, I am sending good vibes for Daffy.
I am sure she will be fine with the excellent care she gets from you and
her otherwise fine health.
Though she may be a little sore after the filing, she should be eating
right away and eating perfectly in 2 -3 days -- that's my experience
when Pinky had it done.
As for increasing her fiber, unlike some here, I am a big fan of carrot
*roots.* Grass would be good. How about brocolli? have you tried a
variety of hays? Sometimes they will go for one when they have rejected
others.
BTW, way to go on catching that before it became a real problem!

Daffy will be in my thoughts and prayers.
I can't tell you not to worry because,
Sasha was put under the gas last week
and I was concerned until she woke up.
>and if anyone with experience
>of this could tell me what I should be feeding her afterwards, I would
>appreciate it
My Vet had Sasha right back on the
very same diet that she had been on.
Sasha was chewing pellets two hours
after having one of her molars removed.
I would not change anything unless it
is somehow warranted to do so.
(have some soft parsley around after
surgery just in case)

We'll be sending lots of positive thoughts and healing vibes for Daffy for
tomorrow.
I know it's pretty worrying because of the anaesthetic, but she should be
ok.
If she doesn't like hay have you tried Burgess Supa Forage Excel? Max gets
two different types of timothy hay and the Supa Forage Excel.

Hi Karin
Ellie suffers with her molars - she's had them done twice, most
recently in March this year. When Ellie has got home after her molars
have been done, I usually pile as much hay into her sleeping area as I
can, so she's plenty to munch on overnight, and offer her a salad with
lots of different textures - hard, soft, crunchy, etc - so she can
pick at what she fancies. She invariably eats the lot through the
night, but I always make sure that I have some pure fruit human baby
food (Heinz Just Fruit is the most appetising) on hand, just in case
she can't/won't eat her salad.
Ellie and I will be thinking about Daffy and sending healing vibes her
way.
Bunny hugs.

Oh Daffy, you have to go to the big bad dentist! I am sending helpful,
positive, healing vibes for your little girl. I don't know about England, but
at some grocers here, you can buy bags of carrots sliced like potato chips.
Maybe that would be more her speed or other things that are thinner and
smaller. Good luck, Carla and Claire. >> Stay informed about: Healing vibes for Daffy, please. |

Karin, good luck with Daffy.... I just read on ether bun about a week ago that
fresh grass, causes the teeth to wear down better than hay....something with a
different chewing motion. We have been saving a big section of timothy grass
for the buns (it's about 3' tall) and they love it. Janice >> Stay informed about: Healing vibes for Daffy, please. |
