Both my gerbils and guinea pigs love to eat hay, but I find that hay is very
expensive. Timothy Hay (no idea why it's called that) costs about $7 for a
small bag in my local pet store. Now, call me crazy, but I've seen those
farms with those 10 foot mounds of hay all over the place, and my guess is
that they aren't worth the price of a BMW each, which would be the case if
the farmers had purchased them for the price sold at pet stores. Then again,
I know that cattle, goats, and horses are frequently fed hay, and my $7 bag
would be enough for about 5 mins of chewing. Does anyone know why hay is so
expensive at the pet store, and if one is able to purchase hay at a more
reasonable price? thx

Mark try cutting out a few of the middle men and you will save heaps. I get
my straw, hay, lucern hay ECT straight from the farmer which they don't mind
doing as they make a bigger profit per bail, I have also located a whole
sale/retail supplier of animal/farm needs and by purchasing larger
quantities have been able to reduce the price of my bedding material from $4
a Kg to $0.60 so shop around it is worth the trouble.
