I have one. Make sure you get the plastic liner. My local garden
center had a plastic pail that fit the inside perfectly. I used sand
and river gravel on the bottom and have it planted with one water
lily, one aquatic forget me not and one water hyacinth. This year
I put minnows in it. Last year I had two goldfish and just as I
bought the tank to bring them inside for the winter they got eaten.
Probably by a raccoon. I had really gotten attached to those guys and
that is why I'm using minnows this year.

I have a bird bath fountain in mine. That requires a water pump to
get the water up about 4 feet. It is encased in a nylon stocking
stuffed with polyester batting. I also do more frequent water
changes.

I also thought about setting up a whiskey barrel pond. I wanted to get 2
or 3 small comets and set them up in a whiskey barrel pond in my yard.
but questions about filtration, the fish growing bigger, the need for
outdoor electricity for the filter, plus a neighborhood filled with
curious children and various animals (including stray cats that roam the
neighborhood at night) led to my decision not to do it.

I know that Wal-Mart and garden centers have probably sold many barrels
to people who set up summer ponds with no thought to what they're going
to do with the fish once they get bigger or what will happen to the fish
in the barrel during the winter months.
