Hi, I have a 9 month old Shar Pei who has developed a skin problem.
She gets red patches (could be due to her own scratching) and suffers
from hair loss on her chest and belly.
She has had numerous skin scrapes and hair culture tests but all have
come back negative.
We are awaiting the results of a skin biopsy but I would be grateful
to hear from anyone who has had the same problem and could shed some
light on its cause.

Thanks

Hair loss can be a symptom of low thyroid -- hypothyroidism. I would have
the thyroid levels checked ASAP. Skin problems are often a result of
allergies. Your dog could have a flea allergy, environmental allergy, or
food allergey. I would treat the dog and the home for fleas and consider
changing the diet. What are you feeding the dog?

This sounds like a bacterial infection due to scratching. Dogs have a
lot of bacteria on their feet, and when they scratch, the skin breaks
and the bacteria infiltrate the skin.

This is what many breeders use to clear up the bacterial infection.

Fill your bathtub (or any other large tub or vat that you can fit the
dog into) with a mixture of 1 part chlorine bleach to 30 parts water.
(this is NO different than a dog swimming in a swimming pool). Shampoo
the dog and rinse with this water. If you can get the dog to lie down
in it, even better. Make sure you continue to rinse the dog and soak it
for about 10 minutes. Do not rinse this off. Towel dry.

The bleach kills the bacteria and also soothes the skin and helps it to
heal. If the dog continues to itch after first getting better, there is
an underlying cause of the itching (food allergy, fleas, etc).

This bleach bath can be repeated every 10 days.

I use the unbranded bleach found in discount stores. Clorox is only a
brand name. Do not use the kinds that are scented tho. Just the plain
chlorine bleach.

If it ends up that the scratching is from an allergy, 9 times out of 10
it is a food allergy. And most likely, to grains in the food. You can
start feeding a food containing no grains, such as EVO.

Good luck, and keep us informed on how this works for you

Judi
PS. I have eczema and itch a lot, so I do the bleach soak myself, from
time to time. Makes me feel SOOOOO good!

hi my sister raises shar pei and of course she said to get the dog to the
vet. it could very well be the thyroid as mr. softy said. also if you use
carpet fresh of any kind in your carpets stop. you also might want to try
natures recipe venison and rice just in case it is a food allergy. good
luck and let us know what happens.
