Post subject: HELP PLEASE: I think my rabbit had a stroke
Archived from groups: alt>pets>rabbits (more info?)

I am from Australia and just a few minutes ago at approx 12:20 i think my
rabbit Co Co Pops had a stroke. We let her out in the backyard to play when
I saw her fall over on her left side with her head tilted to the side. I
picked her up and put her on a soft towel. Her little eyes closed and her
mouth was partially open. Also her left leg wasn't moving (she was slumped
over) and her head was tilted. I kept tapping and tried to get her to move
when all of a sudden she 'woke up' and sat up and her head wasn't tilting.
We took her down to the vet's (mum and i) and in the car she was sitting in
my lap but she was moving and looking around. She is six years old and
nothing like this has happened before. The vet said that she had a miniture
stroke and nothing can be done. Can anyone help please?

What you are describing sounds very much like what my male Toofer went
through the second day he was ill. He went into temporary head tilt. He
had been having pasty urine at times for a couple of weeks before he got
sick.

Symptoms in rabbits can be so hard to interpret, since several illnesses can
share the same symptoms. Two things that I would recommend is to have a
knowledgeable vet test for Encephatitozoon cuniculi -- a parasite that can
invade cells of the kidney, brain, and other organs -- to see if it is
present and active. There are some treatments now (e.g., fenbenzadole) that
are not "approved," but may be effective if E. cuniculi is the problem.

Also, have your vet check the ears for infection and evidence of parasites.
While he/she is at it, a good kidney, heart, and lung check would be
helpful.

I hope that this was just a one-time thing, maybe just a gumming up of the
inner ear. I wouldn't leave it to chance, however. It could have been a
warning signal that you bunny needs treatment for an infection.

Please let us know how it goes,
Anita and Jessie

Also she is in the house right now and she has done a wee but it is a
yellow-crewamy colour and she is drinking water and hopping around a bit.

As of now Co Co Pops has been eating, drinking, weeing and pooing. She is a
bit quieter than usual but she is hovering around Mum's feet and following
Mum around. The night before she wasn't moving around much, just lying
around but today she has started to roam around a bit more.

The vet said that they do not have the facilities to perform the test for E.
cuniculi but we going back to ask more and find out more information

Thanks to everyone with their suggestions and help!

Libby, is she pretty steady on her feet? After Toofer went through this, he
got better for a couple of day, but he seemed weak. His hind legs were
especially weak. If Co Co Pops doesn't seem as energetic as normal, please
look for a place that can give her a good check-up. It can be hard to find
a rabbit-savvy vet in some areas of Australia. Maybe someone on the group
has some suggestions.

All paws crossed for Co Co Pops,
Anita and Jessie

She is very active now, she actually escaped from the kitchen and has been
running rampant through the house until we caught her and put her back in
the kitchen.
We are going to talk to the vet about having a checkup and find out exactly
why they can't do the E.
cuniculi test.
