At work they use a discreet frame covered in a fine 2" square mesh, about a
foot high. This is affixed to the outside of the window frame sitting on the
window ledge. Then you simply open the window stopping just below the top
of the frame.
This wont stop feathers blowing in however. To stop them roosting on the
window ledge you can buy a strip of 4" ( approx) spikes - I've seen them
arranged in a box with plants to disguise. It will stop the majority
although a really broody hen will probably manage to build a nest on top.
