Post subject: PLEASE HELP!!! MY MOUSIE IS NOT DOING GOOD!!
Archived from groups: alt>pets>mice (more info?)

If anyone can tell me what could be wrong with my mouse and what to do about
it, i would be very appreciative!!!!

For a while now my mouse has been itching, especially around his head and
ears. I thought maybe the pine litter i had in his cage was bothering him
so i changed to aspen litter. It didn't help though. Now he has kept
scratching until his ears are raw and a little bloody and his hair is
getting very thin around his face. I have bathed him after it started
getting really bad, and it seemed to help a little, but not much. He had
strange black spots on him, especially above his eyes. there were 2 of
these spots. I scratched them off gently, but they didn't want to come off
and he bled a tiny bit from one, but he seems glad they are gone. He seemed
to like it when i was scratching them off. He held really still while i did
it, when normally he squirms all over the place. I thought they might be
fleas, but they really didn't look like fleas. Also, i see no indication of
mites either. I don't see anythign on him except a couple of those spots
(which are gone now)! He's otherwise a healthy mouse. He's plump and runs a
fair amount.
Another strange thing is that he used to sleep in his jar. I had toilet
paper in it for him to lay on and he used to stay there alot. but
everysince he's started itching so much he has preferred to sleep on his
wheel! So, i took the jar out.

He squints his eyes all the time, but i think he can't see too well. I
think that's why he squints because he's always done that. He used to be
such a beautiful mouse, but now he doesn't look so good. I'm really worried
about him. I'm scared he's gonna scratch his ear totally off! It's already
a little torn. By the way, I bought him out of a feeder tank at the pet
store. When i first got him he was very inactive and i thought he might be
sick. But he got better and was fine until this happened.

Please help me! I'm a new mouse owner and i don't know what to do!!!

Thank you so much,

VanTilden

The symptoms sure sound like mites to me. Technically mites are visible, but
when my mouse had them I never saw any.

Obviously, the best thing to do would be to take your mouse to the vet and
get a professional opinion. Barring that, I would recommend treating for
mites to see if it helps. An easy way to treat for mites (and this is what
they do in laboratories) is to get a pest strip containing dichlorvos and
hang it in the room near the mouse's cage. They are sold in the U.S. under
the brand name "Hot Shot No-Pest Strip," although they can be a little hard
to find (I think I got mine at Home Depot). One advantage to this method is
that it kills shed mites (e.g. ones living in the carpeting) as well as the
ones on your mouse, so it can't be reinfected.

Mine had the same problem & it was mites. I could only see them with a
16X magnifying glass. They look like tiny black spiders. It was so bad
that he itched part of an ear off. He looked terrible. I applied
Ivermectin ( a very tiny amount about the size of a BB with a Q-tip)
twice (10 days apart. Sometimes 3 doses are needed but always 10 days
apart) to his ears (it can be applied orally but this is hard to do with
a mouse) & it got rid of them. Ivermectin can be purchased at farm
supply stores for as low as around $10 a tube.
BTW, I did exactly what you did. I switched to Aspen bedding & it didn't
work
but it is much better than Pine so keep using it. My mouse is back to
normal now. If you have a female mouse than consider getting her another
female to keep it company.
