My 2-year old golden retriever (female) has lab tests that show
results consistent with a UTI, and they are still the same even after
2 courses of antibiotics. The vet wants to do a test where they stick
a needle into her bladder to see what's going on. Seems invasive (and
painful). Is this a common course of action? Do you recommend I seek a
second opinion? Thank you!

There must be a reason for the chronic UTI. I suspect that they will be
injecting dye into the bladder through the urethra with a small tube like a
catheter (under sedation) and taking x-rays to see if there are stones or
mass(es). It's good that they are seeking the cause instead of just playing
ring around the antibiotics. Blood work is always good at this point as
well.

..........This is absolutely the way to go, unless you want them to keep
trying successive antibiotics one after another. They're trying to get a
sterile sample, which they'll then culture and test for sensitivity to
antibiotics. This will tell them which antibiotic will kill off the
bacteria. Whether they'll do more tests as Sharon said, I don't know. The
way to find out is to ask your vet.

Here's a good article on this very issue:

It was worth the question - I know a dog with regular UTIs which
apparently result from her low stance while peeing and her
obesity which points her parts even closer to the ground.

Lack of muscle tone supporting the bladder is also to blame in the case
of extra weight.
