Hi:
A sad thing happened tonight. When I looked into my tank, I found one
of my fantail lost both of its eyes. Does anyone know if there is any
disease out there that will cause a fish to loss its eye?
I don't understand why this is happening? This is one of my bigger
fish and I don't have any aggressive fish in my tank. If the cause is
physical truma (fight or sharp object), I wouldn't expect it to loss
both eyes at the same time. It looks like the eyes just popped out.
When I was feeding the fish a few hours ago, it looked fine. I
noticed the problem when I was saying good night to the fish.
The fish looks OK right now. Swimming peacefull and "breathing"
smoothly. Can a fish survive without its eyes?
It is very very upsetting.

I have a young lionhead that lost an eye about 4 months ago. He is
doing just fine. I would assume you have to take some precautions to
prevent infections. A friend of mine has a goldfish that lost both
eyes a while back and the fish does well. Looks a bit spooky, but
does just fine.

Your fish may have developed "pop-eye" which I have treated a couple of times
by doing JoAnns bucket to bucket method and using the recommended dosage of
Marycin (both Marycin I and II treat popeye). Yes, the fish can live fine
without them, I have a one eyed oranda named Lefty (only has left eye) who is
the target of pop-eye about every 3 or 4 months. None of my other fish have
suffered this.
Let me mention that Lefty is really an Oranda/Ryukin mix that has had several
unusual problems since the LFS gave him to me. (he was a floater there, never
has floated here....go figure).
Make sure that the other fish don't eat all his food, as it will take time for
him to learn to eat by feel and smell. I would separate him from the rest of
the community and do the bucket thing with only water. There are others here
that will have more complete instruction on how to avoid infection (Lefty's eye
never has popped out, I always catch it in time, so I don't know how to treat
the open wound.
I'm so sorry, and good luck.

Oh sure, just like I'm saying I invented the electricity that runs my air
pump.
No, WAIT! I invented air, too.

I guess you are right. If I feed them in the dark, then the blind
fish will do as well as the other fish. However, it does look really
spooky. My wife can't bear to look at it. I have bought clove oil
and vodka. I am ready to put it to sleep, but can't pull the trigger.
May be I should have a poll. Should I put my blind fish to sleep? >> Stay informed about: Gold fish lost both its eye |

NO! Give it to somebody else who'll care for it.

Why put it to sleep? Would you suggest a blind person should be put to sleep
just
because of a lack of vision?
As long as it is healthy let it be, I say.

I don't think so. My wife was creeped out at first by my lionhead
losing an eye, but we just gave him a new name, Captian Hook. She got
used to it, and got upset when I told her I was going to put him down.

Gee Chloe, who asked you anything? Deanna was the person writing about Joanns

Tell your wife not to look at it -- let it live.
Did you ever determine _why_ it lost both eyes at once?
Physical trauma? from what? disease?
