This morning I woke to hear tiny peepings coming from my gerbilarium and lo
and behold I find a clutch of tiny gerbils in a corner of the terrarium. I
was wondering if there is anything I need to do to take care of these young?
The mother seems content to leave them there while she nests in another
corner of the terrarium, not sure if that is normal, otherwise everything
seems ok. I was wondering how to go about delivering the babies, my
midwifery skills being equals zero, but apparently they had managed that
part without me (I'm guessing probably the male gerbil helped deliver the
babies).

Another strange thing is that the mother seems to be separating the babies
into different piles in separate corners of the cage. Anyone knows what this
behavior is about?

sounds like everything is great. just keep the mother happy. she will move
the babies often just to give them a clean bed, you probably saw the two
piles when she was in the middle.

Congratulations :) I hope these go well for you.
Regular color Gerald has been a great dad to his babies although I doubt he
acted as midwife. He's groomed and carted them round when they were little.
All the way through he has guarded them well. He trusts us implicitly but
he'll still stick himself between us and them even though they're 3/4 grown.
Champagne Mum's instincts have improved over 3 litters. Baby losses were
limited to the 2 black babies that died in her first group.
Dont forget, blind little gerbils are damn fast and you may drop them. Keep
your hands in the cage, or over something soft, while you handle them if
possible.
