Hello group. Every time I see a show photo of a German Shepherd Dog, they
are "stacked" with one leg out like a normal stack, and the other one pulled
in underneath their bodies. Why is that? My husband's theory is that since
GSDs were originally police dogs, they were always ready to take off after
something at a moment's notice, even in the show ring, and now it's done out
of tradition. I told him I was pretty sure GSDs were originally *shepherds*
and he shrugged :-). Anyway, does anyone know why GSDs are stacked
differently from other dogs?

Thanks,
Jess K.

One paw is directly under the hip joint and the other back so that the
leg is perpendicular to the ground. This puts all dogs in the same
pose so the judge can accurately gauge angles in the shoulder, back &
croup.
You'll also see differences in the way GSDs are gaited at the end of a
loose lead. All of that stems from the fact that we got very clear
written direction from the breed founder. The double handling that is
also markedly different in the GSD ring can't be blamed on him, though
:-)

Thanks, Lynn. But then, why aren't all dogs judged this way? I wonder, is
there something specific about GSDs?

Thanks, this is very helpful! I like the theory very much.

I have heard that the name came from the propensity to stand on hind legs
and swat at other dogs when playing/fighting/playfighting. Something like
bears do.
