.... How, why, what type and how often?

Just a couple of questions that spring to mind everytime I see people
mention giving their birds grit.

Would the grit from felt roofing be ok to give them?

I keep gray Red Cross grit in front of the birds, always. I also use a
jar of minerals that comes from Dr. Pigeon about twice a month. The
minerals from Dr. Pigeon has 74 different minerals in it. If you will
watch the feral pigeon they spend most of their time on the side of
the road eating gravel.
This is not gospel, but it works for me.

I buy the proper stuff from my feed supplier - because it contains the
minerals that the birds need - and scatter the occasional small handful with
the seed.

No, you don't know what else is in the roofing (chemicals etc).
