How can I get the finches to start feeding?
so far they are ignoring my feeder, which has thistle seed in it.

Short of hanging out a sign at the feeder that says "FREE FOOD!"... what
kind of feeder is it? Is the seed in it purely thistle, or is it mixed with
other seed? Maybe they don't like the feeder? (It's happened to me.)

Also, at this time of year, there is a great amount of natural food (seeds,
berries and bugs) available for the birds and they will choose that over a
feeder. How long have you had the feeder available to them? Sometimes, it
just takes time and patience. Another thing you can offer them is black oil
sunflower seed. That's what they eat in my yard.

Yes, I switched from "thistle" (niger) to black oil sunflower seed. The
goldfinches seem t like the sunflower seed just as much, and there is far
less cleanup to do. (I live in East Texas, so the goldies are only here in
the winter.)

Switch to a feeder using black oil sunflower seeds. We long ago gave
up on niger feeders.
Besides our home made "suet", black oil sunflower is the only thing we
feed and we get loads of American Goldfinches.
