Post subject: Fw: Cabelas to allow sale of puppies on their premisis
Archived from groups: alt>pets>dogs>labrador (more info?)

I found this in rec.hunting

I found out this morning that Cabelas has instituted a new policy
whereby "breeders" (I use this term loosely here) have weekends where
they can sell litters of puppies on the store premises. Thus far,
complaints about this practice to customerservice RemoveThis @cabelas.com have been
met with a defensive posture that only addressed what the breeders had
to do i.e. provide reg papers, health records etc (which are not spelled
out). Nothing about the concern of the home the pup is going to, or
impulse buying etc.

I hope this is not the beginning of a trend that major stores are going
to be having litters of pups on sale in their stores. If anyone feels
the same way I do and wants to express their concerns the address is
customerservice RemoveThis @cabelas.com. Below is a copy of my message to them.
Feel free to pass this information on to anyone you believe would be
interested.

I hope this message is read in the light in which it is sent. I am a
customer of Cabelas and have been very impressed with the quality of
your products and exceptionally high level of customer service you have
provided in the past.

However, I have just been made aware of a new policy that has me quite
distressed. This new policy allows breeders of puppies to bring their
litters to your store and sell them on the premises. Please understand
that this is a VERY misguided policy and should be reversed immediately.

So that you know that this is not a knee-jerk reaction, I do understand
that these policies do have certain requirements - namely that the
breeders must provide registration papers and health records. However,
this only eliminates the very bottom rung of unethical breeders - it
does not go nearly far enough towards addressing the problems of
unethical breeders. For example, your policy does not

a) place any minimum requirements on what those health certificates must
be or contain. An example of a minimum requirement would be OFA
certification of both the sire & dam for hips & elbows; CERF
certification on the eyes of the sire, dam, & puppies; and specific
shots given to the puppies prior to their sale.

b) have any sort of minimum performance requirements on the sire & dam
that produced the litter.

c) have a minimum age of the puppies to be sold (at least 7 weeks old).

d) do anything to address the screening of potential puppy buyers.
Just because someone has the available money to buy a particular puppy,
it does not mean that they are qualified to own such a dog. ALL
ethical breeders screen the people that buy puppies from the litters
they produce and would never sell a puppy to an impulse buyer. Yet
impulse buying is the only type that can go on in a setting that is
being allowed by your company.

You should be aware that word of this policy is spreading rapidly among
the community of ethical breeders. Unless this policy is changed in
short order, it is likely that the reputation that Cabelas has enjoyed
could suffer irreparable harm. And you should keep in mind that the
vast majority of ethical breeders are Cabelas customers (ie. we're not
some disinterested 3rd party).
