Hi Everybun,
I just need to vent for a minute and also see if anyone has some bright
ideas...
As many of you know, I've been searching for a rescued companion for Aimee
for a *long* time now, even before she was spayed last September. To borrow
from U2, I still haven't found what I'm looking for. :-(
Is it just my imagination or are there more female than male bunnies in
shelters? (Is this because of supposed behaviour issues, or are more female
bunnies born because the males can throw their seed far and wide?) Also, I
am having a hell of a time trying to find a mini-Rex bunny. Is this a rare
breed? I didn't think so, but my search seems to be indicating otherwise. My
allergies have proven that longer-furred rabbits are not a good thing, as
much as I love them too. :-(
I have been keeping a close eye on the local Humane Society website (and
they know to call me as well), PetFinder, OREO and Rabbit Rescue. This seems
crazy when you hear about all the bunnies up for adoption everywhere else.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Another major issue that is concerning me is the whole bonding thing, and I
would greatly appreciate any thoughts you might have on the issue. I am
getting this bunny to be a companion for Aimee. While I'm well aware that
there will be a bonding period, it is absolutely essential that it happen as
I'm not set up to house two bunnies separately, nor can the house be
modified to accommodate this. I *really* worry about getting into a
situation where they will reject each other. Then I'd be in a major pickle.
At this point, I don't even know what I'm going to do about a quarantine
period.
I didn't know at the time I brought Aimee home that a companion of her own
species was so important (though I learned very quickly from all the
reading). Even if I had known, though, it wouldn't have helped much because
she was the last of her group. How she could have been left behind is beyond
me, but it certainly was my good fortune! Given this continuing search, do I
even need to say how much I love her? :-)
I am more than willing to travel to pick up a bunny, but due to my current
employment situation (or more precisely, lack thereof) I need to be able to
travel there and back in one day, so about a six hour roundtrip. Is there
somewhere that I'm missing? Someone posted a website of interest to
Canadians last week, and I checked it out, but saw mainly cats and dogs, not
bunnies.
I live in Ottawa, ON - a major metropolitan area with almost a million
people, yet the local Humane Society only has two bunnies at the moment,
frequently has none, and very rarely more. I'm not sure if we are a more
bunny-loving city than most where people keep their pets or if very few
people buy them as pets in the first place, eliminating a demand for
breeders.
Okay, I'm done whining. Thanks for listening. :-)
Take care,
Martha and Aimee (hurry up and find me a boyfriend, darn it!) >> Stay informed about: A Friend for Aimee :-( |

I agree with Arlette - I don't think you necessarily have to get Aimee a
friend. Daffy was a single bun for five years and always seemed very happy
and content, as we both worked from home and she never had to be alone for
very long. We got Eric so that she's wouldn't have to be alone when she had
to spend six months in quarantine when we moved to England. (Of course, now
we can't even picture life without him!) But don't feel like you absolutely
have to get a second rabbit for Aimee's sake.
Good luck with it!

Hi Beth,

Yes, I think it's too bad that I'm not in California at the moment too!!!
:-o
But I do wish I could adopt some of those buns you've been helping out with.
Take care,

Thanks for the input. It's a relief to know that I'm not the only one with
an only bun. :-)

Gee, Thunder Bay or Southern California.... ;-)
Not that Thunder Bay isn't beautiful too, but I'm so sick of the white
stuff! :-)
Maybe the UHF could buy the little guy a ticket on Hare Canada! (I know,
that was a bad one.) >> Stay informed about: A Friend for Aimee :-( |

Martha,
I know how long you have been looking for a friend for Aimee. It has to be
so hard!
I really hope the bunny you mentioned in your other post works out! It would
be so great if you managed to find somebun!

Martha, I've also noticed that there are more females than males in the feed
store cages in Waycross. When we got Quark, there were only two males.
There must have been at least 10 females. Most of them were so sweet --
pink-eyed whites -- that I wanted to take everyone home. I was looking for
Jessie a friend and figured that she would accept a young male the fastest.
Quark was also the sweetest rabbit of the group. His tameness may had a lot
to do with his frailty, since it turned out that he had health problems.
(He is a demon now that he feels good.)
On a previous trip to the store, there was only one male rabbit in a group
of 10 or so. I wondered what happened to the males. Maybe there is a
selection for more females in a litter to keep the rabbit numbers up if they
lived in the wild. Or maybe there is something about the conditions that
the rabbits live in that selects for female babies.
Another possibility is that females may be more hardy than males, so are
more likely to live through the embryonic and post-natal period. I am just
guessing some of the things that might be happening. I don't like to think
of any other things that breeders might be doing to the excess males. My
males have always had an extroverted sweetness that I find very endearing.
My females have been sweet, but more reserved. They let you grow on them
slowly. Jessie draws closer each day, but it took several months (and lots
of good things to eat) for her to warm up to me.

Absolutely adorable! On the other hand, I don't know of any bunnies that I
wouldn't say the same of. :-)

Yes, I am. It would take me 24 hours of driving to reach Thunder Bay and
visit Arlette! Stoney Creek would be about 8 hours, give or take. I greatly
appreciated the information you sent to me! It's just that Ontario is such a
huge province.

I'm hoping he will, and that the logistics will fall into place. It's been
such an insane week that I haven't had the chance to do much towards this
over the last few days.

Sounds good. Of course, any links to adorable bunnies are always welcome.
:-)
