I think a lot of the designer mutt craze is the desire to have
something no one else has, plus something identifiable. A designer
dog is *something*. Mutts are unique, of course, but they don't
fulfill the requirements because they don't make very good status
symbols.

And, hey, all the better if it has a cutesy-poo name. Just, for the
love of all that's good in this world, anything but Chorkie. That
is absolutely repulsive.

Andtoo, if you want to keep your sanity as intact as possible, do
not ask Teh Google to show you pictures of Chorkies. One of the
first photos is of something purporting to be a Crestoodle, and it
is not for the faint of heart. I've said before that there are no
ugly dogs, but I think I may have been too charitable.

An acquaintance of mine, a person who really ought to know better,
allowed her 7-year old min pin (with kidney disease) to get knocked up
by a friend's JRT. "Oops", she says, dimpling.

Oops, my ass. She was unable to get pregnant herself, has two, troubled
adopted children, and is obsessed with getting her animals pregnant.
The min pin was only the first.

The backyard-bred, cross-eyed blue merle BC bitch who lives her life in
a basement, is completely un-health-tested, with the litter mates with
catastrophic bi-lateral hip displasia. Two were destroyed before their
first birthdays, the third was lucky enough to have an owner willing to
mortgage the house to buy him titanium hips.

The 19-year old swaybacked mare with an untreated draining abscess on
her hip. She would conceive but was unable to carry. A veterinary exam
revealed a uterus full of cysts but that didn't stop her from trying
twice more.

Oh, and when I expressed my concern about her niece, 16 years old and
living with her, dating a 22 year old man, mentioning that I'd be
worried that she would end up pregnant, she shrugged, smiled and said (I
kid you not), "Oh, there are worse things that could happen." Freakin'
psycho.

I spoke my mind and those were the last words I'll ever say to her, by
her choice and mine. She is hopelessly deluded and I don't need to
stand by and watch helplessly as she orchestrates yet another
slow-motion train wreck. I prefer to spend my efforts on dogs and
people that are salvageable.

She said that the breeder is very responsible, and told her that her dogs
are specifically selected to be mellow, laid-back and to get along with
everything. It's possible, I suppose. I was looking through the Dogo
boards to get a better idea, and it does look like Dogos have the same sort
of dog aggression issues you'd find in other bully breeds. I sure hope she
knows what she's doing; her Boxer puppy is very, very nice.

Blame it on the almost obsessive need of (almost all) english speakers to
shorten things if they can be shortened, combined with the feeling that if
they use the "jargon", they are part of the group.

As for Chorkie...As a name of a "breed", not so good.

As a name for a small, hyperactive dog, it fits.

I think they should have gone with "Yohuahua" instead of "Chorkie",
although either one is pretty bad.

Oh, I was thinking it was chow x yorkie. And I thought, how did those 2
get together? I was going to suggest an alternate name, Yow. But now the
alternate is Yorhuahua.

As always when these things come up, I have to point out that I love
calling Zoe a cockerchow. So I am one for the cutesy names. But I adopted
her from the shelter rather than paying a breeder, and she was part of an
oops litter rather than a designer dog litter.

I don't see any problem with cutesy names for non-designer dogs. It's
just when it's being used to market them that it gets a little
obnoxious.

Andtoo, in the spirit of full disclosure, Elliott was known as Puppy
Chow.

Okay, I've got an open mind, but That's Just Wrong.

(Even ignoring the inadvisability of breeding for mutts.)
