Any help would be appreciated.
Today, whilst walking in Co Durham, I found a very tame, very friendly but
somewhat distressed African Grey Parrot.
I have checked with a local bird breeder who advised me of the NCA - which
does not appear to be much help. I have checked Local Newspapers, in lost &
found columns - with no success and I have had it scanned at the local vets
for microchip - which it does not have.
It has what I believe is a breeders ring.
I'm aware of how much these pets are loved and would obviously like to
return it to its owners.
Anyone know how I can trace it through its ring number, or the existence of
a lost parrot register and is it worth reporting the find to the police?
Thanks.

Go to www.birdhotline.com and see if anyone posted a lost grey in that
area...you can also post that you found one...

Just letting you know how nice this is of you, as not many people
would bother trying to find a tame AG's owners.

I'm glad to see there are good people in this world. You can try
taking him to a vet, as he might have a microchip.

Thanks Louis - Already had him (or her!) to the vets, but no chip.
Actually, we owned an AG approx 10 years ago and obviously know how special
they can become as pets - so we'll keep looking.

You sound like a wonderful person! I commend you for taking the time to try
and find this parrot's owners--not too many people would do that, choosing
instead to keep what is not theirs...or worse. Just curious, what will you
do if you can't find the parrot's owners?

Well the question doesn't arise because I have found the owners. I contacted
several organisations but finally the nearest police station informed me of
an elderly couple who had lost their AG approx 5 miles from where I found
it.. I phoned the lady and after a very tearful conversation she and her
hubby came with the correct docs and collected their bird. I don't have to
tell you how ecstatic they were. The bird had been in the wild for 4 days.
Thanks to all who took the trouble to reply.
Just for the record, if we hadn't found the owners I would have simply given
the bird a good home for the rest of it's days(or mine, whichever came
first!)
