I have a fish with me where I am staying while going to school. He is
a fantail goldfish and quite big (about 6 inches long). This weekend
is a 3-day weekend and I will be going home. That means my fish will
be without food from Friday afternoon until Monday night, possibly
Tuesday morning.

I would like to know how long my fish could go without any food. I'm
sure he can survive the weekend until I get back, but just to ease my
mind I'd like to hear from others about their experiences.

Also, how should I go about feeding him before I leave? For example,
should I feed him more to fatten him up before I leave? Or should I
feed him less so that he gets used to having less food before I leave?

Any comments are appreciated.

3 days is fine. I've left my goldfish 8 days without food when
I was on holiday. What I did was let algae grow around the tank
and not clean it for quite a few weeks before I left.
Don't over feed before hand to compensate for lack of food.
This will just mess the water up.

How big is the tank?

The tank is only 10 gallons. For some reason algae isn't growing in
that tank... Maybe he eats it as soon as it grows and that is why he is
so fat!

Thanks for replying.

Hi
It's nice that you care about your fantail.
Please be assured that he will be OKwithout food for many weeks depending on
the temperature of the water.
The cooler it is the longer he will survive, but DO NOT give him more food
before you go away!
Enjoy your break from school & don't worry about your fantail, he will be
very glad to get some nice food when you return.
Pat

It's probably more important that you do not leave your fish near a
window or heat source as the rapid changes in temperature would be worse
that no food.

You are probably safe not feeding for several days if the fish is healthy!

Good luck.

As someone already mentioned, if the water is cooler, say 70oF or so
then he will not require food. Higher temps mean higher metabolism.

I would also suggest changing some of the water a couple of days
before you leave him. 25% is normally good - I assume you do this already?

Thanks for the help, everyone! My fantail, Bonkers, survive the long
weekend without food. Although since he was in the dark the whole
time, when I got back his pupils were quite large... But he is fine!

In 2 weeks from now I have a break for one week. I will be gone a
total of 9 days. Now I am wondering if I should bring him home for
this break or not. For the short weekend I went away, I bought him a 7
day feeder block, but there isn't much food in those things, so I don't
think that would last a week.

I try to keep it cool in my room, but I can't control the temperature
of it really, so if the heat's on in the house it gets warmer.

It would be much easier to just leave him here, but I worry an aweful
lot! I will at least be leaving him with a feeder block. Does anyone
know what kind of feeder block is good for a 6 inch fantail, who has
quite an appetite?

Thanks again!
