I have three goldfish and the tank bully drastically out-competes the other
two for food.

The bully's body is about 3" long and the other two fish are half the size.
Tank is a standard 29g. I feed twice per day and I'm not in position to
feed more frequently than that. At each feeding, I feed enough for the
bully to have 3 pellets and the other two to have 2 pellets. But the bully
will snap up its share of pellets within seconds and then pushes the other
fish aside to eat more food. Sometimes this causes the bully swimming
problems after feeding. Not too mention that the tank's second toughest
fish will eat its share and the weakest fish will be lucky to get any food.

I've tried tricking the bully: put some food in one part of the tank and
when it goes to get it, dump the rest on the other fish. The result is
always the same. The bully snaps up its food (doesn't even bother
to chew it at that point) and then it will push the other fish aside
and eat their share.

I'm primarily feeding Marineland's Bio-blend sinking pellets with
occassional dried baby shrimp and occassional green peas. Recently I
started soaking the food for 5+ minutes in a cup of tank water and
squeezing it to get rid of any air, but this doesn't always help prevent
the bully's swimming problems.

The bully is only a problem during feeding time. At all other times
the fish are perfectly well behaved tank-mates.

Either I'm not feeding these fish enough or I need some idea to make
sure all three fish get what they need without overfeeding them.

Thanks,
E.Otter

I'm still new to keeping goldfish, but I wonder if maybe your bigger
fish is bullying the others because he wants more than 3 pellets? I have
read that the general rule on feeding is to give them enough food that
can be consumed in 3 minutes.

It seems to me that 3 pellets would be consumed fairly quickly by a 3
inch goldfish. Maybe a good method would be to measure out the food not
by counting the number of pellets, but in "pinches" of food.

Try this: get a large net and use it to isolate the big guy
long enough to feed the other two. You don't have to remove
him, just trap him against the side for a minute or two.
Or use the net to bring the other two to the surface
and feed them in the net, one at a time or both together.
In either case, once the little guys are fed, release
everyone and put in enough for the big guy and let
them fight it out.

A tank divider may work as well. However if you have a comet type and 2
fancy types, mtl there will never be parity; at least in an undivided tank
