I'm setting up a DIY water changer for my breeding tanks and I need a
reservoir that is fish safe.I was going to use 50 gall tanks but that's
rather costly so any safe alternatives would be appreciated

Look into plastic horse troughs at the local farm supply. Rubbermaid makes
a line that should give you water volume capacity with safety.
I use a couple 60 gallon vats (only 2/3 full with water) that were used to
store bulk candy at the bulk food shops. No problems after 6 years of
constant use.

RubberMaid makes a 44 gallon trash can. You can even buy a caddy with
casters. Works great and lasts a long time. But, I always see those 55
gallon plastic barrels for sale in the paper and they usually have a fitting
or two on them. They are usually between $6 and $10 bucks each.
