I just bought a cornsnake (first one) and I have a question on feeding her.
I've read in a few places that I should remove her and feed her in another
location but I've also seen some people put the pinkies in a plate in the
same tank. Does it matter? I use forest floor by Zoo Meds (looks like
cypress mulch). I just ordered The Corn Snake Manual by Kathy Love but I
don't think it will get here in time for her feeding. I appreciate any help
you can give this newbie.

if your going to use a loose substrate then you have to feed it in a
seperate enclosure so she doesnt ingest any of the bedding because that can
cause an impaction. If you had her on newspaper then u could feed her a
pinky in her enclosure just fine. Since she is new to ya give her a week of
no handling so she gets used to her new tank then you can offer her food and
if she eats leave her alone for 2 days so she can digest it.

i agree about the way to keep objects or dirt off food, but i have never
waited to feed a snake so it settled down, infact yesterday i rescued a
snake that had the same owner for 15 years, once i collected it i showed it
and took it out to lots of people, as soon as i tried to feed it it ate,
never waited for any snake to settle.

its just a precaution rule, most snakes wont eat until they are used to
things, my boa didnt eat for a week after i tried, my ratsnake wouldnt eat
until 2 weeks after i got him home, my corn didnt eat because it was too
busy exploring his home tryin to find a way out. some snakes will eat, some
wont. corns have a great feeding response IMO buut ya never know. just
gota make sure there is a proper thermal gradient and the temperatures are
right to make sure nothing is gonna make him not eat.

We have two 36" corns, and we feed them by hand. Always have. They're
currently on rat pinkies, and will graduate to fuzzies or hoppers the next time
we order. We ALWAYS feed prekilled, and recommend you do the same. We lay the
snakes down on a table (or hold them) and place the pinkie close to the head.
One will halfway strike and the other will just crawl up and start eating
(usually from the butt end).

We use paper towels for substrate, and that's great. Easy to clean, and the
snakes like to crawl under them to hide.

The Love book is a good one.
