My sharpei is 13 years old (born in 1992) she is female and spayed, never
had a medical problem until now. Not eating, when she eats she throws up,
eating grass, laying down most of the time. She is walking very slowly and
stopping , appearing in pain. She is usally very quick paced and pulls me
when we walk. Blood work, urinalysis, and fecal exams done. Found protein
a little high, and found white blood cells a little high. Vet has her with
fluids going into her system with an IV, they tried giving her food, she
refused. They are going to do an ultrasound of her stomach, intestines,
pancreas, lymph nodes, and colin. What could this be, she was fine on
Monday, and then on Tuesday, we took her into the emergency pet clinic and
she has been there ever since. >> Stay informed about: My SHARPEI IS NOT EATING, HELP!!!! |

I am really sorry to hear about your dog's condition. I know how
distressing and overwhelming it can be when a companion is ill and you don't
know what is causing the problem. It sounds like you are doing everything
medically possible to diagnose the illness. Last year our female became
extremely ill without any obvious symptoms preceding her collapse. It
turned out to be a case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Our vet didn't
have a clue what was causing the problem The emergency vet sorted it out
after a few days but it was touch-and-go.
I hope things turn out well for your. Please keep us informed. >> Stay informed about: My SHARPEI IS NOT EATING, HELP!!!! |

Thank you Vox Humana for your reply. I just read an article written by Dr.
Jeff Vidt and speaks of Amyloidosis. I am faxing this article to the
veterinarian now as I think it pertains to my dog. It indicates tests that
should be done, steps to take, etc. Amyloidosis is common in Shar-Pei
dogs. Please ask the powers above that our dog will be just fine. Thanks. >> Stay informed about: My SHARPEI IS NOT EATING, HELP!!!! |

I can certainly relate to this. Our first female started to have episodes
of shivering. The vet didn't have a clue and of course the lab tests were
about normal, with some indication of a decline in kidney function. After
doing some research, I also ran into the articles by Dr. Vidt as well as
others on the subject. Our vet wouldn't even entertain the idea that it
might be amylodiosis and didn't want to prescribe colchicine. I finally
gave her copies of the articles, but by that time it was too late. I don't
think that there would have been any real treatment, but the medication
would have minimized the episodes of fevers and pain during the last few
years of her life. She died a few days after her 12th birthday.
We now have a blind dog. When I asked the vet about what appeared to be
cataracts and brought up the possibility of glaucoma, he told me that it
couldn't be glaucoma and that seeing a specialist for the cataracts wasn't
worth the bother. It turned out that she did have glaucoma and we might
have been able to save the vision in at least on eye. We had to have both
her eyes removed recently.
I hope you have a good outcome. If your dog is 13, you have obviously been
a wonderful caretaker. >> Stay informed about: My SHARPEI IS NOT EATING, HELP!!!! |

Acutally our dog Shea is 12 and will be 13 on December 31st. The vet called
us last night with results of her ultrasound. The vet stated that her
spleen has large mass, and they are recommending to have the spleen
removed but this is not the cause of her not eating, when they remove the
spleen they will biospy it, as well as they getting a biopsy of areas.
This will all take place on Monday. The surgery and everything that goes
along with it will cost us $3400.00, we still have to pay $1600.00 for
admission to the hospital since Thursday, and medication they are giving
her via IV and fluids via IV. My husband says that Shar-peis have a
lifespan of about 12-15 years. He is contemplating this surgery, if it is
even worth it. She is my baby our dog, and she is a part of our family, I
feel that I have to make every effort even if it cleans us dry of our
money. What do you think? >> Stay informed about: My SHARPEI IS NOT EATING, HELP!!!! |

We had similar vet bills this year for our 8 year old female - the one with
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and later with the eye removal. It was
difficult financially but at eight we thought it was worth it. She is fully
recovered and is doing just fine without vision. The age range for shar pei
that I have seen is usually stated from about 8 - 12 years. I think that
with better understanding of care and nutrition, that range has probably
been shifted a bit. I think that 15 is pretty elderly for a shar pei,
although I know of one that is 17. Most shar pei seem to live to about 10 -
12 years in my experience.
No one can make the decision for you because there are so many variables. I
still miss our first shar pei, even 4 years after her death. When it came
down to the end, her quality of life was so poor and she looked so bad that
I couldn't let her linger so I could have a few more days or weeks with her.
I felt guilty and I was angry with the vet. Still, she lived a long and
happy life and at the end she was little more than skin and bones, too weak
to walk, dehydrated, not eating, and had labored berating. I had to let her
go because it was the right thing for her. I have one that is going on 11
now and I value each day with him because I know that his days are numbered. >> Stay informed about: My SHARPEI IS NOT EATING, HELP!!!! |
