Post subject: Dominance problems?
Archived from groups: alt>pets>rodents (more info?)

I had changed cages for my two male rats. The used to be cage mates, but
because of a medical condition I had to quarentine one for a while. well,
Recently I cleaned the cages, and switched them, because I needed the other
one in a breeding cage for a few days. I keep the food in the main cage for
the males in a dispenser, like the type used for rabbits. Tipsy (the healthy
male) had no troubles from this, or getting water. Whiskers, who was the
same dimensions, was shown where this food supply was, as well as the water.
After a 2 days, I got worried about his lack of food intake, yet he seemed
ok. Then he went in his little house (they love to use poptart boxes) and
didn't come out for a few days. Now he is all skin and bones, with little
response. I placed him back in the quarentine cage, and have him on a soft
diet and vitamin water for the time being. I don't know if he stopped eating
because of a dominance thing between the two males, or if he's taken ill to
something else. Any thoughts?

He's very responsive at the moment...of course his health came first. I
added vitamins to some fresh water, and gave him some food. He's skin and
bones still, but active now

Thank you, Nic. I really appreciate it. He was the tamest of all my rats,
and he always loved to sleep next to me.
