Hi there,
I have a black lab,(Jake) 3 years old, 80 lbs. The day after he's had a
really big day of playing, we notice that he limps alot, and moves fairly
slow. His joints are hurting him, so he takes it easy.
A friend told me that it would be ok to give him a small dose of Ibuprofen
to ease his joint pain. I didn't want to do this without asking other
opinions, as to whether this would be safe for him or not.
I would appreciate any helpful replies on this.. or any other suggestions?
thanks,
Jake's mom

MMM -- I wouldn't give him a med like that. However, I follow a
ook -- Dog Owner's HOME Veterinary Handbook, and follow it like a Bible.
Reduce his activity. He is a young dog. They love to get wild.
Keep us posted. Esp. me, as I had a Black Lab, Jake (80#) as he recently
went 'Over the Bridge'. He was the best!!! I really miss him. I have a new
friend now, but those Jake's are something special. (It is still gut
wrenching.)

It is not ok to give Ibuprophen to a dog Ibuprophen can cause bleeding and
kill a dog. It should be ok to give him 1 aspirin twice a day and
preferably a buffered aspirin. To be on the safe side I would call your vet
to double check on the dose for a dog his size.
My vet had me treat Barney with aspirin for 2 years for arthritis till it
got to the point where we had to give him prescription medication made
specifically for dogs.

Hi Joyce!
I'm sorrrry to hear about your Jake.. There's nothing like losing your dog.
We lost our Jack (lab rottie X) a few years ago, and Jake was the one we
adopted after him. (Also have Charlie a Border Collie X with something?)
I don't know how I'd be able to cut his activity. He is constantly at our
side panting, usually with a ball in his mouth, and that excited "Lets go
outside" look.. he's sooo cute...
Have a good day :)

Rollo was limping a few years ago. After lots of Vet visits, including
X-Rays, they decided it was muscle injury. WE just had to bring him along
slowly. Now we're up to walking 3 miles every day and the limping has
almost stopped. At the latest Vet visit , she said there is some feeling in
the knee which could be damage to the ACL. The bottom line is lots of times
they really can't tell what the problem is, but that regular exercise can
help. Might do you some good too! LOL!

LOL Lord knows I should be out there running along side him when he catches
the ball, there's something to work on this summer ;)
The problem isn't him getting a lack of exercise though. He's a pretty
active dog, and we try to indulge him in that as often as possible, so we go
to the park alot, and throw the ball in the yard and stuff, in the summer he
swims tons (can't keep him out of the water if it's around!)
I don't know if he needs more or less exercise.. lol
Happy Easter!!!

Hi Jake's mom,
No DO NOT give dogs ibuprofen or acetominafen. They should only take
buffered asperin, no more than 100 milligrams. twice a day. Most
asperin is 325 ml. so check the label. FYI, its easiest to hide the
pill in a bit of semi-soft cheese or cream cheese.
If your pretty sure that it's joint pain, not sore muscles, I'd check
with the vet because 3 yrs old is rather young for joint problems.
If he's a couch potato 5 or 6 days a week and then gets out for a
really big run, play day it may just be aching muscles because he over
does it on his a day a week. That's what my guys used to do before I
retired and had more time for hiking. Hope it's something simple and
your pup remains in good health for many years to come. Regards, Rigel >> Stay informed about: Dogs and pain medication |

I can highly recommend Metacam. My lab has been on it since he was six
months old and he's now 5 years old. Without it, he could barely walk . . .
severe arthritis plus two elbow surgeries. It was sad to see such a young
pup living with so much pain and not being able to walk properly. But with
the medication you wouldn't even know that he has any wrong with him. He can
run, jump and keep up with all the dogs in the park. His quality of life has
greatly improved (to say the least). It's a prescription available from
vets.

The amount of aspirin a dog can take depends upon the dogs size. 100 mg
twice daily won't even put a dent in pain for an 80 lb dog........the dog
referred to in the original post is an 80 lb lab. Like I said call the vet
to get the proper dosing
