Have had 2 labs. One was okay to bathe; the other (my
latest) is easy, but have only washed him outdoors. Part of
the trick is a) getting dog into bathtub and b) keeping dog
there long enough until finished!

why? If he is dirty or stinky, then yes bathe. Labs should
be brushed regularly, altho I am guilty of only doing it
occasionally.

Labs are by nature water dogs (love to swim, great
retrievers for water fowl hunting). Having said that, my
first lab did not read that chapter and hated swimming.
When it was really hot and I wanted to cool him off, I had
to go into the water first and encourage him. He's go in -
get water and give me a look as if to say 'can I get out
now?' Have not had experience with new guy yet.
Having said that - both my labs love puddles and have been
known to lower themselves into revolting, muddy water.

Adding to what Paul said in his response:
Labs should probably not be bathed too often. They have a
very dense coat and natural oils which protect them from
water and the cold. Other than that comment, I agree with
the previous post.
My current lab loves when I use a hair dryer!
When I have washed either dog (except for when there is a
'have to', like an encounter with mud or wildlife), I try to
do it in the warm weather and keep the dog outside until
dry. Because of their thick coats (I think it is actually 2
layers) and the oil, they take a long time to dry.
And I'll echo - have fun!
