Hi,

How easy it to give a dog bath ?

Our lab is now 8 months old ( we've had him for about 4 months) and I think
its now probably a good time to give him a bath and smarten him up abit.

Any advice ? I'm not sure if he is going like it as he doesn't think much of
water (always walks around puddles, etc..)

I'm thinking of employing the services of one of those mobile dog washers
that operate, are these worth it ?

TIA

Andy.

You'll have fun!

When we bath or shower Shadow, we empty everything from the bathroom except
for his shampoo and towels, whoever is doing the washing, gets changed into
a swimming attire, you'll get as wet as he does.

To make things better for him place something in the bottom of the bath for
him to stand on, an old towel or something, so he does not slip too much.

Use warm water.

Use proper doggy shampoo.

Wash his head last, a wet head seems to make them want to shake all the
water off!

Have your house warm for him to dry off thoroughly

Lastly, make a game of it and talk reassuringly all the time!

Have fun!

Regards

Have had 2 labs. One was okay to bathe; the other (my
latest) is easy, but have only washed him outdoors. Part of
the trick is a) getting dog into bathtub and b) keeping dog
there long enough until finished!

why? If he is dirty or stinky, then yes bathe. Labs should
be brushed regularly, altho I am guilty of only doing it
occasionally.

Labs are by nature water dogs (love to swim, great
retrievers for water fowl hunting). Having said that, my
first lab did not read that chapter and hated swimming.
When it was really hot and I wanted to cool him off, I had
to go into the water first and encourage him. He's go in -
get water and give me a look as if to say 'can I get out
now?' Have not had experience with new guy yet.

Having said that - both my labs love puddles and have been
known to lower themselves into revolting, muddy water.

Adding to what Paul said in his response:

Labs should probably not be bathed too often. They have a
very dense coat and natural oils which protect them from
water and the cold. Other than that comment, I agree with
the previous post.

My current lab loves when I use a hair dryer!

When I have washed either dog (except for when there is a
'have to', like an encounter with mud or wildlife), I try to
do it in the warm weather and keep the dog outside until
dry. Because of their thick coats (I think it is actually 2
layers) and the oil, they take a long time to dry.

And I'll echo - have fun!

Barney loves the part of bath time where he gets all lathered up. His fur
is so thick that it really takes a good massage to get the suds down into
his fur to do any good. He just stands there and soaks up the suddsing but
he HATES getting rinsed. Once the lathering is done it's a real challenge
to get his to stay still long enough to make sure all the soap is out of his
fur.

Then there is Brandy...........:) This is one goofy dog as best as we can
tell she is lab/basset/beagle. Large lab head & thumping tail, short little
legs, and howls just like a beagle. She hates baths and will run and hide
if she knows she is getting one. She loves the river and will jump right
in. Loves to roll in mud puddles and other assorted goodies. But she hates
to go out in the rain and absolutely detest walking in wet grass in the
morning. She will defiantly pee & poop in the drive way rather than get he
dainty feet wet in the early morning dew. Then as soon as the suns out and
the grass is dry she's out in the yard in a flash to do her business.

Oh well gotta love them even though they have their little quirks.
