If you use a match, better to use a paper match rather than wood,
because of possible splinters. And unlike a suppository, DO NOT
insert the match all the way into the dog's rectum - leave the
head end sticking out. The idea is to stimulate reflexive bowel
contractions with a 'foreign' object, much the same way bowel
contractions are stimulated as the stool moves into the rectum.

You wouldn't want the chemicals in the head end to dissolve
internally. Since medications can be delivered by suppository
(absorbed into bloodstream) I assume that the match head
chemicals might be absorbed as well.

Yes, upon thinking about it, that would also be my assumption, but
that's still counter-intuitive and I should have added that I
appreciated the more specific information.

However, I would also assume that the match wouldn't be inserted for
any lengthy period of time, thereby minimizing the chemical absorption
issue, but having no experience, I wouldn't know exactly how that
works, whether the efficacy varies by dog, etc.

One advantage to the grass stem over a match is that they're soft enough
to pretty much preclude any damage to the dog. I've taught several club
members the technique but after the first time, they have to do it
themselves and I'll supervise if they want.

It ain't rocket science. Hell, the surgeon's rule for learning a new
procedure is "Watch one, do one, teach one". Thus knowledge is shared.

They also get the "pumpkin with supper and ice water and/or sodium free
broth to entice reluctant drinkers" lecture.

I prefer the grass stem approach, too, when grass is available.
Especially for my chihuahuas. However, I've been in situations
where no grass is available, or the only grass is dry and breaks
too easily. A paper match, handled gently, is an acceptable
substitute.

True... but person who asked isn't able to watch, or has someone
has posted the technique on YouTube?

Oh. Huh. I like to cook and I tend to default to the most basic form
of any given ingredient. Pumpkin is just pumpkin unless it's pumpkin
pie filling.

To you. Some folks have never heard of unsweetened pumpkin. I
don't know where on earth they think pie filling comes from. Maybe
the same place as plastic wrapped hamburger? Anyway, it's never a
bad idea to clarify that you mean the unsweetened stuff.
