Hi everyone

Need some tips.

Over the past few months we have kenneled Duke often and where he stays has
an outdoor run that he loves!! They say they have to practically drag him in
every night LOL.

He is an indoor dog, but enjoys being out and our fence is only 4 ft high
and I feel like I have to watch him all the time. He loves to just go out
and run around and roll around and sniff and investigate and just lay
around, but gets into mischief and barks at the fence and like I said the
fence is only 4 ft high !!!

We would like to construct a long wide kennel run type area with a 6 ft
fence. I have chose an area that gets shade and sun for him and it will
mostly be used just for few hours here and there, so it is not something
that he would be kept in while away, at night or winter months. Soooo my
questions are as follows:

Buy the pre made kennel fence?
Conrete floor? He likes mud and digging, weed and eat grass dirt etc lol.
Do I need housing since it is just for him to enjoy being out and checking
things out (he is a very busy boy)
The area is very flat and runs along the back of the yard.
How big should it really be - we have plenty of room and size really is not
an issue.
If there is anything else I may be missing let me know

Thanks
Angie

Ok read something about staying away from concrete which i wanted to do
anyhow - found a nice kennel set up at tractor supply - comes 10 x 10 x 6
and extra panels available. so got that much figured out - but it is the
what to do with floor yet. Dont really want to leave grass - it wont last
long and would become a muddy hole............

A concrete kennel pad acts similar to a sponge. As liquids are introduced
onto its surface, they soak deep into its pores. These damp pores in the
concrete provide the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, mold, mildew and
unpleasant odors.

Concrete may also be used for multi-tiered kennels. It is good, strong
material that is also easy to clean. The only disadvantage is that insects
and other parasites may live in the cracks that will form in time.

Guess that was easy enough. There was more elsewhere but that was a
beginning for you.

Still looking for alternatives - I am seeing smooth pea gravel mentioned
often - remember this is just a place for him to hang out for couple hours
during good weather. And not using concrete means if we want to move it
elsewhere, we would be able to. Hubby has decided to make it about 10 X 30
X 6. Who knows what he will do LOL

Concrete, and quite likely those rubber pads that Russ mentioned would be
able to be sterilized clean which might be something you need at this
particular crossroad in YOUR life. Stall mats for horses and cattle also
are probably available at the tractor store.

I personally use a load of slag stone then pea gravel.

Another suggestion maybe would be patio stones (the big 12" x 12" ones) Use
that for half since hubby wants to go so large and keep the other half
gravel or dirt so he gets the best of both worlds.

And yes, by law everywhere, if he is going to spend time in it, he needs
some form of shelter even if he'll never need it. If hubby is feeling
ambitious, he can build a dog house from wood.....and if not, go back to the
tractor store or pet store and just pick up one of those plastic houses with
the big doorway. You might like to grab a decent sized tarp too for
stringing up across the top at one end for shade too. Alternatively a good
size piece of plywood leaning lengthways up the side of the dog house will
work too.

10 x 30 eh...NICE!!!

Hey

What about that 1/2 to 1 inch thick rubber that they use in doggy day cares?
They come in 4x8 slabs methinks

LOL I know I know! My kennels are 16 x 8 each and most think that's too
big for the size of my dogs while I would like them bigger. The SPCA thinks
that they are perfect so I'm not complaining. lol

Now the one thing to keep in mind just in case Duke is as smart as we all
know he really is....that 30 ft is a nice starting runway for going up and
over! I don't know if you remember my girl Sonja or her son Toxic, but they
found that the 16 ft was a perfect distance to have for takeoff to go up and
over that 6 ft height! Sonja started it and taught Toxic and the pair only
went over for the purpose of getting into the other ones' kennel! lol I
put all of hubby's ladders across her roof....like 15 of them, staggered
over the entire length....damn dog found a way to get herself through all
the ladder rungs.

LMAO One day I was out feeding and as I left the east side of the yard with
two kennels over there, this red dog went flying past me and up into Sonja's
kennel. I started cursing Sonja wondering where it was she came from behind
me. Get over to her kennel and she comes cruising out of the house to meet
Toxic who was just landing inside! Stupid ass pair....they looked so much
alike that I had to look underneath to see male or female!

Needless to say they both got kennels with full roofs!

Been there, done that. 6 feet is nothing to a determined dog. When
Buster was with us he would go over our 6 foot privacy fence to visit
this good looking black lab (Rosie) . Her 4' chain link was just a
step. When he finished visiting he would come home the same way.
Imagine my shock to find my dog in someone else's yard. I spent hours
trying to find out how he was getting out. My neighbor came over and
told me how he was doing this and that he had been doing this about a
month. Also about the pavers I hope your dogs aren't as determined as
Rudy or they will be dragging them around the kennel. Rudy drags
concrete blocks around. Of course he also drags 6' landscape timbers,
Rachels wading pool (with water), boards, whatever he can find that
someone leaves in the back. I do a constant search and sieze in the
back yard. Carolyn
