Post subject: Diversifying my birds' diet
Archived from groups: alt>pets>parrots>budgerigars (more info?)

Hi,

I haven't posted to this list in a long while, since my ISP decided it
wasn't going to provide access to newsgroups any more.

Anyway, my question is about diet, specifically ways to induce my
budgies to eat some fruit and vegies. I've had my two birds for almost
three years and ever since I got them, they are almost without
exception only interested in seeds. I know budgies are naturally more
inclined towards seeds than other types of parrots, but still, I'm
surprised they won't try anything else. During the couple of years I
found they enjoyed alfalfa sprouts, but then I stopped giving it to
them for a few months and now they ignore it when I put it out for
them. They like their seeds, millet and seed treats.

A couple of months ago I got two guinea pigs and their diet consists
of a large amount of fruits and vegies, so it got me thinking again
about doing something nice for the birds, some way I might be able to
get them intrigued. They are very stubborn girls who are paranoid
about anything new.

Wendy

Hi Wendy,

Nice to see you back! My budgies eat seed in dishes. seed in seed sticks.
seed in seed bells. seed on the bottom of the cage. millet, thats it! they
*might* eat lettuice if they really feel like, the only other thing they
like is a bit of chickweed, that is a weed, there is a nice *seed* in that!
dont know if you can access that in the city. as you can see, mine only
like seed.

Sheila.
