Close, but not quite. Didn't feel the need to reply to Dr. Solo's last
post, since I got the info I needed. However, it looked like Watkins Lady
kind-of, sort-of stuck up for me, so I'll explain at least for her benefit.
According to everything I read and viewed from the various newsgroups and
web sites on planted aquariums everyone recommended turning off the
air-pumps at least during the day. The action of breaking the surface or
rippling it from filters and from air-pumps causes CO2 to
dissapate/exchange/whatever/leave the water faster than it would if the tank
surface were perfectly still. If I want my plants to flourish I want to
make sure they have just enough CO2 during the day to do their
photosynthesis. Too little and they grow slowly or get sick. Too much and
I'll end up with lots of ugly algae. Since the plants produce O2 as a
byproduct of photo- , I wouldn't need the air pumps during the day. I might
need them at night, but ideally not during the day and I have no desire to
spend money on a CO2 injection system of any sort.
