Archived from groups: rec>aquaria>freshwater>cichlids (more info?)

I saw some Discus setup uses fine white sand as
substrate base

I was wondering if this is Ok :
1) Discus likes to graze substrate for food bits,
so will the fine sand irritates its gills?
2) Will the sand alters the water condition of
the tank? We all know Discus likes it soft
