There could be two things going on there: 1) the raccoon
could be habituated to suburban yards and whatnot, or 2) the
raccoon could be sick. Up here we have such a serious
rabies problem that I tend to assume (2) when I see a
raccoon where a raccoon oughtn't to be.

If it's hanging around I'd be inclined to talk to the county
about their recommendations for getting rid of it.

Shelly said in part.....
My recollection is that our local ordinance handles that by the amount
of time the dog spends tethered............Round the clock tethering is
not allowed.

Shelly,
You must live in paradise. There certainly is not an ordinance
against tethering in this county. Tethering 24/7 is just fine, as long
as food and water is within reach, oh and of course shelter, but the
county considers a tree to be shelter.

Thanks - I'll keep an eye out and ask the neighbor to as well. I don't
need a raccoon hanging out w/my dogs!

Although without those eejits, I wouldn't have my Miss Queenerton. So I
strangely appreciate that her former owners were without a clue.

On the other hand, if they had a clue, she probably would not have
birdshot in her hindquarters.

She's at daycare today, and I got to see a lot of her playbows before I
left. I love playbows, they are the funnest little pose ever.

Actually, I've returned several dogs who were on the lam to their homes,
and I hate it when the address isn't on their collars, because usually
it's a near enough neighbor that I can just walk him/her there, rather
than going home, with the dog, which raises a ruckus, and getting my
phone, etc.

A lot of people have fences here, so sometimes if the people aren't home,
I can just leave the dog and secure the fence. But usually the people are
home.

Great! Now I can not do anything because there are good points on either
side of this one. What I really should do is order about 10 tags per dog
and put down all the information for everyone on the planet that could
possibly help if they went on the lam. So, it would be a normal tag, tags
of any friends, tags of any kennels where they'll be boarded, one for the
vet .... I should have a special collar/harness made that's all tags and
not much else.

Oddly enough, I've never been able to catch any dogs I've found running
loose on the side of the road. By the time I pull over and find a place to
park, they're gone. Or, I'd try to coax the dog into getting near, and the
dog wants no piece of it. We've returned the two dogs that broke out of
their house and turned up on our lawn, and the one we found on our walk, but
that's it. There were at least 8 or 10 others that I either couldn't find
again or wouldn't let me approach, even when they were all tail wags and not
being unfriendly at all.

You can get collars with contact information sewn into/onto
them, and put together with tags and microchips you can
implement a comprehensive multi-stage canine retrieval
strategy (talked with marketing folks this morning).

Why is it I always find dogs in the evening or on the weekends? Oh yeah,
the rest of the time I'm at work. Anyway, Zoe is not thrilled with new
dogs, especially females, so it would a hardship to have an extra dog
overnight. Not that I wouldn't do it, but it would be really hard.

Well, I'm not going to keep an extra dog overnight if I don't have
to. So far, I've been lucky enough to encounter escapees during
normal vet hours.

Also, I probably should have said "has been more useful to me" than
"is more important to me." I don't have any advice of my own on
what to do tag-wise, beyond that I think they are important.

They know you and your kind. Even Queenie has figured out the concept of
confederates.

But I have had 3 dogs jump into my car when all I did was pull over and
open the passenger side door (from inside the car). One was a beagle, and
2 were border collies.

My phone company doesn't provide address information to on-line
directories. Animal services here will bring a missing dog
directly to his address, though, and if you're home there'll
only be a $25 fee.

I wish that were the case here, actually.

That's a damned good deal.

Are your dogs USB-compatible?

Another reason to move to Canada! Our animal services here won't take a
dog that I pick up -- they only pick up dogs that are running loose, and
if I have the (stranger's) dog, then s/he isn't running loose. Argh.
