Anyone have a recommendation for a place I can order a decent set of dog ID
tags. Metal, engraved, of a sturdy stainless or similar. The ones I got at the
local Petco were just crummy, and there's a plethora of websites that offer tags
- I'd like to just order a set once, have a good set come, and be done with it.
Having a good sturdy S-ring coming with it would be very good, too.
TIA,
Banty >> Stay informed about: Decent dog ID tags |

Just an opinion on "S" hooks - I think they are fairly dangerous.
Better to get a ID plate that bolts to a collar. I don't do hanging
tags at all, but have had very good luck in the past with multi-ply
plastic one that have a metal grommet around the hole. These days, the
dogs all wear wallets, which serve a lot of purposes (ID, tags,
temporary ID, a poop bag, sometimes even a house key!).
Despite the name, I have no connection with the company, I just buy
their products:

I've been using boomerangtags.com for a bunch of years and a
bunch of dogs and have been happy with them. The tags are
exactly as advertised, there haven't been any errors, and
they arrive quickly.

Thanks, Melinda! - that's exactly what I was looking for, and my order is in.

I've bought from boomerrangtags and these hold up great. Ladys tag is
always getting chewed on from Gabby when they play and it looks just like
new.

Well, Janet, after going to this site every time you mention it, I
finally ordered wallets for my dogs. I think it was the idea of keeping
the poop bags in there that did it for me. But also, Zoe has twice gotten
her tags caught in the ac vent, pulling it out of the floor and scaring
her to death.
PS We just don't believe that you have no financial connection to The
Real Boss. We know you are the real boss.

Heh - if they'd only send me a commission or some free wallets! They
hold up pretty well, but when a certain puppy chews on one that is on a
big dog collar........ They have been going collarless in the
house/yard since she arrived though. This too shall pass!

I have seen some with velcro on the back rather than slide on. Can't
remember where. I don't think martingales should be used as ID collars
though (although I support having ID on anything that may be on a dog).
On collars that are occasional use only, I've done a few things -
sharpie written name and number on the inside of the collar, made a
laminated slip of paper that I surgical tape to the inside or outside of
the collar (can even be rolled around a nylon slip collar).

Thanks. Just curious... why don't you think martingales should be used as
ID collars?

They restrict. The whole idea is that they can restrict enough so a dog
can't back out of one. That means if they get caught on something, the
dog can't escape. I never want that kind of collar on a dog who is
running freely or left unsupervised.

You don't have to leave them that tight, though. I've used them as
ID collars, after loosening them enough that they can tighten fully
without being too tight.
I also use one as a tie-out collar, similarly loosened and attached
by one of the two dead rings. I wouldn't do that with a dog who
backs out of collars or who is unsupervised or who is interested in
making a run for the border, but it works very well for the dog I
currently have.

I think supervision is a key word here ( as it often is!).
