My boxer/spaniel has never had a sick day in his 14 years. But
starting January 14 he has been unable to hold food or water in his
stomach. He spent three days at the Vets where he was diagnosed as
having a pancreas problem..not cancer...where the digestive juices
from the pancreas are misfunctioning. Vet kept him on intravenous
fluids for three days and released him to me yesterday (Sunday) saying
he thinks the vomitting has stopped. But, sadly, it continues here at
home; the only positive sign being that the vomit now is somewhat
digested; before it was coming up almost completely undigested. Vet
gave me 6 cans of Eukanuba Fel Low-Res dietary dog food to feed my dog
which I coninue to do 2x a day (half a can ) Vet also gave my Buster
a 14 x 17 radiograph and barium swallow with negative results. Water
is almost immediately upchucked; will my dog get enough moisture from
the Eukanuba to sustain himself if I knock off giving him water?
I will greatly appreciate any help for Buster.

Sounds like this dog may have pancreatitis, inflammation of the
pancreas. Until the pancreas has become less inflamed, the nausea and
vomiting will continue. It is important that the dog not receive food
when the pancreas is inflamed.

You should probably take the dog back to the vet, unless you have
already discussed this issue thoroughly with the vet. also ask the
vet about Viokase, whether this might be helpful or not.

Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can easily happen with
pancreatitis, so it is important to keep in constant touch with your
vet.

Also, your vet could teach you how to give subcutaneous fluids.

Best of luck...

Post this to alt.med.veterinary. Meantime consider a second opinion. My
experience with pancreatitis is that food and water must be withheld until
the pancreas settles down. Perhaps your dog needs to go on IV support for
awhile. Yes it is expensive but life saving. At least that was my
experience!

........Take him back to the vet ASAP. He needs to be on IV or subQs with
nothing by mouth and the vomiting must be controlled. Dogs can die of
pancreatitis.
